Lock button on side no longer works

The button on the side that locks the pda so it won't turn on accidently does not work any more. I've tried a hard reset which did nothing. I spoke to Dell and they said they have not heard of this and of course it happened 2 months after my warranty ran out so Dell won't do anything. Which I understand but it drains the battery when I put it in my purse. So I bought a hard metal case to help with something touching it and turning it on. But another reason for battery drain is when a reminder pops up and I'm unaware (at work or something) and it keeps flashing/waiting for me to dismiss or reset it.
Is there a way to get your reminders to remind you but if you don't get to them right away then it won't keep flashing and draining the battery?
I hope this makes sense. Hard to explain.

I'm running WM5, so I'm not sure the scheme is the same, but try this for controlling how reminders display . . .

Notifications
Event: Reminders
Adjust settings as desired.
