My mom is wanting her first pda. I've been trying for quite some time to narrow down what would be best for her needs. I thought you guys would be the best ones to help since the only model I've ever owned is X50v. I'm a little leary about the axims only because they are no longer being made. But at the same time, I've been very happy with mine.
I was looking at the X50v for her but it is more money than she wants to spend and probably more pda than she needs. The only thing she really wants the pda for is to download ebooks on it so she can take them with her. She has a little trouble with reading so I need a good screen and possibly one that will allow her to change to bigger fonts.
Recently they were impressed when I plugged my mp3 player via a cassett to my car stereo and thought that might be nice. So they may use it for a mp3 player. They would not be using it for games except possibly solitaire, bejeweled, etc. nothing major for graphics.
Of course they don't want to spend a great deal. They were hoping maybe $100. So I was looking at used one's on Ebay. What would you suggest would be good for them. Also they are not very tech savy so I would like one that is pretty reliable.
Thanks so much for your help. It is much appreciated.
Nancy
i would probably go for the Palms for my mom.
reasons: 1.. they usually cheaper than the window system. 2.. have most basic function that you listed. 3.. easy to use.
i, myself, on the other hand would not go for Palm, that's because I push my x51 to the limit
As psionandy asked, if she is not computer literate you will have to setup everything for her. Including downloading the eBooks to it. You should consider getting what you are comfortable dealing with and make it a turn-key operation for her. If you don't want to devote that much time then discourage her from a PDA. As you mentioned, maybe a cheap MP3 player is a better route.
You are going to have to spend more than $100 to buy something new. Palm does have some devices that are under $200 I don't know what their capabilities are. You are not going to buy a WM device new for that kind of money.
Eric, according to you everything is inferior if you don't own it...
Palm is a valid alternative, just as a Mac is a valid alternative to a PC for people who aren't as computer literate and apparently, so my workmates lead me to believe, is also a good alternative even if you are computer literate. I'm not fond of Macs but I can see why people like them.
Likewise Palm is useful, and a lot simpler than WM. It's *possibly* less versatile, and is being pushed out of the market, but it is by no means rubbish, just different.
For the price range I would certainly expect you to be looking at a Palm, they may be not as powerful as a WM device (Palm processors are usually slower than WM processor devices) but they should still do most of what your mother wants to do. WM devices tend to be more powerful and cost a lot more.

Honestly though, Palms and Macs have their place, it sure ain't in my household but there are people who will find them easier and more friendly and so they do have a place.

The original poster asked for suggestions about pdas. Not a discussion of macs. You all can debate the virtues of your various preferred computers at the water fountain. Let's get this thread back on track.

Sorry, wasn't meaning to drag the thread off topic, I was just trying to say that the OP should consider a Palm as a valid alternative just as a Mac is a valid alternative to a normal PC.
Different horses for different courses and all that.

just curious... does mom have a new pda, or did she decide that she wanted an mp3 played instead? (like my mum did)
