Thanks pinyon, KPDUTY, and AgentDelta (and also Kronalias for the detailed instructions) for the help and support in getting this figured out!:approve:
You three are awesome for being patient with me and for your guidance!
My last dilemma was that, after implementing everything you three said, I forward the port to the laptop but my router had two different connections; one hardline and the other wireless. I set it the port for the "hardline" ethernet connection, yet the laptop was active on the "wireless" 802./ connection.
Once I switched it to my preferred setting it worked like a charm.:) Thanks again...this will help alot with school and work!
From reading the earlier post....now I just have to do the research about the security risks this may pose!!!!!!
Don't know if this would be any help, but I did a howto using remote desktop via Dynamic DNS that I've used from work to home, and added the extra step of changing the default RDP port for an additional bit of security.

Annoying, I'm getting a "cannot be installed because it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate" error with it. I've retried other cab files, and they all install perfectly. Tried using tweak to turn off the security notifications, and while that does prevent the popup asking if it's OK to install it, the installation still fails with the same error. Any ideas?
I have install it on my Dell Axim x51v running WM5. After 10 idle minutes connected to my XP system, I get a message on the PDA that the session has timed out. Looking at another forum, someone else has the same problem. I have gone into XP and changed all the group policy settings I have seen on other posts, I don't think this is the problem, because I have a Nokia N800 internet tablet and I have no issues with timeouts. Also, there are no issues when I use the built in Terminal Services client. I am also using the hack to get 3 RDP sessions into my XP if that matters, which it shouldn't.
Well I guess I give up on this. After upgrading my Axim x51v to Windows Mobile 6, in hopes that it would work, it still times out after 10 minutes.
Actaully if somebody could help me out to test this I would really appreciate it. I'm just trying to use WM6 RDP client to connect to my local LAN at my house to an XP workstation and have it sit idle for more than 10 minutes without timing out. I've tried every other RDP client that I can find and they don't time out....just the WM6 client.
I got this working nicely on my x51v, however the one issue I am having is when in full screen mode, the soft keyboard does not seem to work. Does anyone else have the same issue? Being in the regular (non full screen) mode, the keyboard works, but once I'm in full screen mode I have no way to going back to the regular mode unless I log back in again.
I also have the same problem with the full screen...not sure what the answer is.
Does your RDP session timeout after 10 idle minutes? Ive had serveral people test this and their's does. Just trying to see if it's the same problem for everyone.
1) RDP works natively with windows XP, you don't need a static IP address as long as your router will display a DHCP table if you connect to it with PIE.
2) If you want to access your computer from another internet connection, you need to do the following:
2) a) a) Either discover what your static IP is (if you have a static one) or
2) a) b) Set up Dynamic DNS (DynDNS: DNS Hosting, Email Delivery and Other Services - it's free). If you go with DynDNS, get the DynDNS updater for windows unless your router has DDNS as a function anyway.
2) b) Set up port forwarding/virtual servers/virtual ports/whatever your router calls it in order to forward the RDP ports to your laptop/desktop. The ports you need to forward are 3389 TCP and 3389 UDP. This will be easy enough to do, but as I said, is router specific.
2) c) Disable Windows Firewall (the pile of crap that it is) and set all other firewalls to allow access to your system on 3389 TCP & UDP.
I appreciate most of this has already been said, but hey, it's always worth saying again.
Oh, and for the benefit of Kronalias, the reason for me to use RDP on my ax is so that I don't have to be tied to my desk at work - I manage over 1000 servers, of which 750 or so run windows, of which 700 or so run windows server 2000 or windows server 2003, of which all of those 700 servers get managed via RDP. Now if only we could get a console connection out of the terminal services client easily... ;)
Company wifi + axim + phone to get passwords = DJUnreal sat in kitchen with gert big cuppa and still performing his job roles ;)
My session does time out after 10 minutes of idling, but for me it's not too much of an issue since I am usually only logged in when I'm actively doing stuff...
As far as the keyboard thing, I tried assigning a soft button to bring up the keyboard, but that did not work too well either. The keyboard automatically disappears right after it flashes on the screen. Can anyone confirm if an external keyboard works?
As far as I know the 10 minute idle timeout is hard-wired into the WM6 Pocket PC client. This was irritating me too!
Alternatives are:
1. The Terminal Services client that comes as standard with most Pocket PCs. Personally, I'm not a great fan of this - it's cumbersome to use and, although it doesn't have an idle timeout, it just doesn't cut it for me.
Install this on your server (that's the thing you want to control remotely). Choose the server option (the installer has both server and client software on it), and install it as a service.
Make sure you have set your server to a static address (read my original post in this thread to find out how to do that).
Real VNC leaves sound on the server - which means I can use mine (it's a headless - no keyboard, video or mouse - PC which I use to stream music) when the client is turned off, and that's a major advantage to me.
It *does* have an idle timeout (which defaults to an hour), but you can configure this on the server to a much longer time.
ok so i'ma freelance web designer and photographer, and i was thinking that this might be a nice option to have access to my desktop, with i meet with clients. before i try and set this is do you guys think i would be able to run programs like Adobe Bridge and Dreamweaver from my x51v?
I got this working nicely on my x51v, however the one issue I am having is when in full screen mode, the soft keyboard does not seem to work. Does anyone else have the same issue? Being in the regular (non full screen) mode, the keyboard works, but once I'm in full screen mode I have no way to going back to the regular mode unless I log back in again.
I don't have a solution to the keyboard issue. However, whenever I am using this client, I can exit fullscreen mode just by pressing the hardware button that I have mapped to my right softkey (the same softkey that activates fullscreen mode).
