You can do it by desoldering the RAM chips and replacing them with bigger ones. Need some pretty special equipment to do that though, PocketPCTechs will do it for you.

i have heard that an upgrade in memory will consume more battery power as well.

Well, not really.
The power consumption is mainly determined by the cpu speed, communication systems like wifi, IR and bluetooth, screen intensity and how often the memory is accessed during execution.
Compared to that the memory size doesn't really count - talking about power, that is :)

shoot, if thats the case then why dont modern PDA/PDA phones have 128mb of mem then?!

darn cheap manufacturers

im just bitter because the tytn/titan still have the same amount of mem as a 3yr old PDA and costs double what we would have paid at the time.

You got a point there - maybe :p

My X50v is doing just fine - with some additional SD/CF cards :)

I also had the 128MB upgrade to my Axim x51v by PCTechs and they did a great job. I noticed no change in battery life. It works much better now that I do not have to worry about memory usage.

Those that took the plunge, do you think it was worth it? I'm contemplating this but so far have seen very few instances where I relly *need* more ram...

The reason why manufacturers don't often put in 128MB is two fold.

1) Cheapness: 128MB of memory costs more than 64MB
2) 128 of the *same* type of cheap RAM as the 64 *will* consume more power. 128MB of lower power RAM that has similar specs will cost much more, relating back to point 1.

PPCTechs say they use some more expensive power efficient RAM, so that's one reason why it costs so much.

If not accessed - no power
We are talking about the X51v, remember ?
It keeps the memory content even without power

RAM takes power whether it is accessed or not, memory cells have to be constantly refreshed or they loose their data. FLASH memory on the other hand requires no power to retain data, but has much lower performance than RAM and requires a lot more power when writing than reading.

Pull the battery out of your X51v, the RAM will loose it's contents. Flash keeps it's data but your device will soft reset. RAM *does* require power to keep it's contents.

RAM and FLASH storage are different things. RAM is memory, Flash is storage, too many people confuse the two, and manufacturers really don't help the matter.

My point is still correct, 128MB of RAM will consume more power than 64MB of the same type of RAM

I have a spare X51V which is a clone of my daily used on. It remains on the shelf waiting for me to need it. It has been that way for the last two months. I just put a fully charged battery back into the clone and it works just fine. All data and settings are still as they were 2 months ago.
