Temporarily operating my Axim X51v without the touchscreen
Hey there,
I damaged my Axim X51v touchscreen during cleaning. The Axim itself still works, but I can't use the touchscreen at all. Yes, I should've read all the threads about this first . Given the exorbitant replacement/repair prices I was quoted, I've decided to give this one up, but I just need to get some data out from an application (MyPersonalDiet), and that requires upgrading it to a sync-capable version.
Without the touchscreen, I don't know how to interact with the various prompts I get during the upgrade. Existing hardware buttons don't help--can't even do an "enter". I don't know if soft keys could actually help, but I don't have those enabled either. Assuming soft keys can help, I wonder if there is a way I can configure my Axim through my PC to enable enough button-based operation to get through that program upgrade process. For instance, could I somehow get to the SPB PocketPlus key mapping functionality and configure some buttons to select Yes/No on upgrade prompts?
Requirements :
* Requires ActiveSync connection.
* Support Windows Mobile 2003, WM 5.0, WM 6.0
* Support PocketPC (Keyboard/Mouse)
* Support Smartphone (May not fully working)

What do you mean wne you say that you can't interact during the 'upgrade"? What are you trying to upgrade?
There are methods of accessing your PDA if it requires a calibration of the screen (at a cold boot).
Search on some of my older posts. I'll see if I can get the correct link to the instructions for this. Essentially, you connect your PDA to the PC, kill the bootup screen cal routine then push the calibration numbers maniually to the PDA. that will let it boot up. Once that's done, just grab whatever files through ASync.
it's possible to operate Axim w/o a touchscreen (just like MotoQ, that doesn't have a touch screen). You do have to get the right tools for it.
Handy Menu or WisBar Adv can assist you on closing with hardware button close assignment.
Pocket Informant has also been designed towards no touch screen operation.
Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll try some of these programs.

I'm trying to upgrade MyPersonalDiet on my Axim to resolve a synch bug that's preventing me from getting some data. The upgrade has a whole bunch of prompts that I can no longer use touchscreen input to click through.

how did you damage it? Is it cracked? It might not be broken. sometimes my touchscreen stops working and a soft reset fixes it.
I cleaned it with alcohol as I have other times, but forgot to dry it immediately. It air dried, and got an interesting blob under the screen. The screen stopped working, and refused to work even though the blob dried out over time. Dell reps told me I'd have to pay around $280 for a replacement :(
Hi, you can use fake cursor, it lets you use the dpad to move a cursor in the screen, hope it helps you to use your Axim
BTW, Empel, how would I run this? I can get it onto my Axim via ActiveSync or an SD card, but it seems that until I run it, I won't have a cursor to run it with--catch 22. Perhaps I'm missing something?

The first time you run it shows you the installation after that I think for your case create a shortcut in your startup folder

Aha. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing that if it is an install rather than a simple "xcopy exe", I'll get the unsigned program warning dialog. I guess I'll use MyMobiler and I could get through that part if I wanted to continue to use my Axim even after I get my data.
You could always replace the digitzer screen yourself with parts from eBay. They start as low as $9 and up to $50 depending if someone is more greedy than others. Also, I found that quality could vary.
I personally, replaced the digitizer on mine (2 times, because I broke one of them) and once for my friend. If you have never done this before, search for a tutorial and READ it before trying. One of my digitizers had this protective peice of plastic glued to it that made the screen dull and not as pleasant to view. I tried removing it and broke the new digitizer. The other two were perfect with a small peal off plastic. Also, I didn't know how fragile these things are so please be careful as they are glass and very thin.
Good luck. :approve:

Fake Cursor above is good. I've used the utility many times.
A few months ago, someone on ebay was selling digitizers for $10US. You might try one of those. Alcohol is conductive. If it got between the two layers of the digitizer, then you've essentially shorted out the X-Y sensing.
Do a search of my posts here and you will find detailed instructions on how to remove the old digitizer and attach the new one.
BTW, your hot breath and a kleenex is all that is needed to clean the digitizer surface. Any more than that and you're asking for trouble.
