How to use Cingular phone for Axim internet access?
I am about to buy a new phone from Cingular- now ATT- and if possible I would like to get something that will allow me to connect my x50v to the internet when there are no hotspots around.
Are there any guides to how to do this? I looked but couldn't find anything. What phone would be best, what services would I need and how would it be set up? I am guessing bluetooth will be involved for the data transfer between the phone and the axim. The intention is to allow internet apps on the axim to connect anywhere.
This would be a very useful guide, I hope someone has an answer.
Most of the phones from ATT with bluetooth have the capability that you are looking for. Speeds will vary according to which way you access their network.
Be aware that there are now several versions of the different operating systems on the ATT phones. I don't know about the symbian os, but for windows mobile on smart phones or pdasyou will find windows mobile 5 and 6 as well as a middling version between the two. With the middling version (aku3 - I think- ) and wm6 you will connect through the internet sharing feature and not the BT modem connection and dial up networking. There are several good internet blogs on this -- google should point you in the right direction.
If you are looking for a phone only, just make sure you have bt and that it is edge or 3g capable. I had a motorola v551 and it worked great. Don't know if they are still available, but they were solid - literally, survived many a construction site accident. Definitely old school - no music, no flash - just solid. But there are others as well.
So first know which system your phone will use and then search for the setup that corresponds to that for your axim.
Thanks for the links. I have been able to hook up my razr to my X50v successfully. Now I have to figure out which data plan I should get. Any recommendations?
I spoke to a cingular rep on the phone and she steered me towards the PDA data plans. I asked if the smartphone plans, which are cheaper ($20 unlimited), would work and she said she couldn't officially recommend those.
I'm getting the feeling that there's a cheap way of getting the data, but they want to steer the PDA users towards a more expensive option. Is there anyone with any experience on this? Which plan are you using?
I've used 60mb last month... you do not want to underestimate your usage.
Buy high for a few months and then scale back if necessary

Well, I am not going to be using my PDA for streaming, watching youtube, or anything substantial. Mostly for checking e-mail, fetching documents, looking up information such as movies or addresses. I don't want to pay $40 for that. From reading previous posts I get the feeling that if I get the smartphone plan (unlimited $20, or 5MB for $10), I may be able to get away with it although those plans are not for PDAs. They price plans differently for the devices although the service is the same. Hopefully they will not realize that my razr is acting as a conduit to my PDA and won't charge me anything extra.

I have been using medianet unlimited and have not had a problem with cingular. I only use the connection to check email on occasion and when I'm traveling to connect my pda. I am only given access through the wap gateway, but it does the trick.
