Julie thanks for that, Apparently I can't observe the rules here and participate in other forums where I leave this alone because the site policy says it's allright. I have said before there are plenty of other places you can go to disscuss this
If you feel strongly about this ROM being illegal, why bother posting links on where to download it in this thread you made. You obviously think it's noteworthy to otherwise you wouldn't have bothered posting this.
Cause that is a different site with quite a lot less traffic and a quite educated and advanced user base, and I'm a mod there and I'll get pulled up very sharply if Ive done the wrong thing. It's not Aximsite and has nothing to do with here if you want to address those issues post to me there
Listen, guys, this discussion is not relevant to this thread. I have already stated that the discussion here has gotten off track. Get it back on track or else I will close this thread.
The Forum rules say 'Its ok to go off-topic but if a discussion gets really off-topic go post it to the lounge.' Everything so far has been relevant to the initial post.

Why would I? I don't have issues regarding your post over there. I have issues with your post over here, specially with your stand against illegal roms and it's noteworthiness. Simply put, if you consider it illegal, then you should treat it as illegal no matter where you post.

Well a rather good specific point. When I post on Mobility/Aximsite I defer to the site rules dictated there. If I am allright to transfer news and updates to sites that I am involved in it has nothing to do with the site policies here
Snip
It has been decided by the well informed team that moderate this site that this is not noteworthy.

As a news editor on Mobility site, I certainly did see the news item as it went across various blogs... I was certainly aware of the previous rom editions... and the people claiming they had been running a wm6 axim for the last 6 months.
So, to answer the first person who asked, why wasn't this front page news?
Here's the thing. Whatever you may believe, the policy on hacked roms was not invented just to stop people talking about wm6 on an axim.
The current forumulation came about directly from users on aximsite and mobilitysite who wanted a simple, fair policy to say what could and could not be done with respect to the whole issue of rom hacking. A key concern was that the existing rule was only applied to some devices and not all.
So a new, fair, simple to understand policy was written, after much disucssion.
Enter Psionandy... breathless with an exciting story about the wm6 rom.
Now the thing about fair and simple rules is they apply to everyone. Nowhere in the set of rules is an exception for news-editors.
I have read the rules... and so I couldn't find an honest way of posting the story while obeying them. In a similar way I had previously not posted about several other wm6 hacks on other devices... or stories about how various bits of warez could be made to run with some imaginative tweaking,
Should I have broken the rules because I would directly benefit from
a) a large scoop that lots of people would see my name attatched to? at the time I had the story I could have had the first aximsite/mobilitysite thread...
b) discussion of a rom upgrade for a device that I own? My x50v currently runs wm5A02...
While some people might have gone for the selfish glory, I did the honest thing and didn't file the story.. and i'm pretty sure that's what the other news editors did.
And that's my honest answer to the honest question.
I as well... I'm running a cooked rom from XDA on my 8525. But for me, that ROM (or at least the OS that it contains) is licensed on my device... It may not be vanilla, but it is still licensed.
I have an x51v on my Wife's nightstand... she uses it for playing bejeweled and occasionally an ebook or two and grocery lists. I suppose I could upgrade it using the illegal ROM, but I see no benefit to it and no need for it.
I saw the story as it was developing, but the rules here are pretty clear AS WELL as the behind the scenes discussion about it.
BTW, have you all noticed the merger contests and the other give away contests that Aximsite/mobilitysite is famous for? Many of those items were given to the site by the developers and manufacturers... Are you aware of the product discounts that are available for members of this site?
How many developers and manucacturers would be that generous to this community were it to be come a haven for software pirates?
There is NO dispute with whether the WM6 ROMS for the Axim as everyone knows (or should know) that they are illegal... it is illegal and will not be discussed here. Go discuss it at XDA-devs... If you got it from there then talk about your problems with it there.. or give the dev an attaboy for his efforts.
I don't see why you all feel so attached to promoting it here where it is so obviously not wanted by the management... This is not Football's playground, take his ball and his ROM and go play elsewhere with that.

You are promoting the illegal 8525 rom in your posts. Why shouldn't we be able to.
the ROM ie... the WM6 OS is not illegal. The manufacturer of the tytn released it to the market and it is freely downloadable from their site. The manufacturer released it to AT&T for them to distribute and support from their site.
The version of the OS that I happen to be running is the version as is licensed for my device. The fact that someone unpackaged and removed and added componenet not vanilla from the factory is of little consequence beyond voiding my warranty.
Very similar to buying a computer from a big vendor, loaded down with AOL and all the extra crap as well as the XP Home that is licensed to it. Then wiping it to remove all the software and installing a clean version of the same OS that is licensed to it. Just because Vista is available for other computers doesn't give me (or anyone) the right to install Vista on it without paying for it. and it also doesn't require the above vendor to give me Vista just becoase other PCs have Vista.
My device is licensed for WM6, and it is running WM6... my only concern is voiding the warranty by installing the non-official version of it.
If you bought an x50v, it is licensed for 2003. NOT WM5 and NOT WM6
If you BOUGHT the WM5 upgrade from Dell, then you are licensed for WM5
If you bought an x51v, then you are licensed for WM5... not WM6.

He is saying he is running it. I brought up this issue in private with another mod, and was told it's allowed ot post WHAT YOU ARE RUNNING and if you so feel the need to advocate it (read: to say you like it and it's a good upgrade) but you cant go in-depth about it.
EDIT: too slow... was beat by a single minute! da** my slow fingers! lol

Admission is NOT the same as promoting. After the existing guidelines were updated to cover hacking, I have heard neither "promoting" the position.
If anyone has a different position outside of AximSite/MobilitySite, then that is their business. So long as they respect the rules and guidelines, they will not have any problems. If you take issue with their position "outside", then take it up with them AT THAT OUTSIDE SITE.
We, the Moderatorship, understand that a lot of people like to push the limits of their equipment, and hacking has traditionally been the way to accomplish this. In and of itself, we would not have any problems with this practice.
The problems stem from the use of ROM image components that are unlicensed or of dubious origin. If a good Hacker uses bad parts (unlicensed or dubious origin), then the work becomes compromised and tainted. Pirates tend to creep into the equation at this juncture, and since they are the ones that we are actively targetting, then we find that we must place the "hacked" ROM images in the same category as "pirated" ROM images. Since moderators are not programmers or lawyers, they cannot differentiate between a legal modification and illegal mod, so again, it works the best to lump "hacked" ROMs with "pirate" ROMs in order to be safe on a legal basis.
Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience, but these are the rules. Likewise, it is the job of the moderator to enforce these rules.
The point of this thread was to take a sampling of those users who thought that this website should have different rules allowing publication of Hacked/Pirated ROMs. This sampling has had almost one full week to take it's polling count, and those that voted affirmatively accounted for less than seven thousandths of one percent (136 positive votes out of a userbase of 19,000+ users). Regardless of the outcome of the vote, this is NOT a democracy. This is the property of an individual, who has set rules and guidelines for users, each of whom agreed to these terms when they signed-up to become a member.
We have given most everyone the chance to discuss the issues at stake, and to present their best defense of their position, but in the end, the decision of the site owner is final. You can read more about the posted Rules and Guidelines here. I have also posted a stickie in most of the Axim forums to ensure the word gets out. There will be no further discussion on this topic.
This discussion is now over, and the thread closed.
