Please recommend a cingular phone to pair up with my X50v
I have an X50V that does everything I want, except for high speed internet while out and about. I looked into pda phones (e.g. 8525), but I am not willing to give up my 20GB 620 mhz VGA device for qvga, microSDs, slow cpus, etc. I don't mind carrying two devices. So I am looking for a phone that I will use only as a phone and as a bluetooth modem for my X50v. Price isn't really an issue. I currently have a Razr V3 from Cingular and can connect at low speeds (thanks to Radimus' guide).
I've been reading reviews but haven't been able to pick a phone (or decide to wait for a specific upcoming one). 3G + being able to pair with the X50V is a key of course, followed by call quality. Music, videos, etc are all minor issues. Do you have any suggestions? Is there a phone in the near future of cingular (AT&T) that I should wait for? I appreciate all thoughts.
I realize it may not be the most efficient use of money, but is it possible to connect the 8525 to X50V through bluetooth? I could use the 8525 as is when I don't have the Axim with me, and tether it to the X50V when I do (more often than not).
I just don't see myself giving up the X50V soon- the CPU speed is barely enough for me right now with emulation, complex browsing, high bitrate videos, etc and I can't imagine putting up with much slower cpus. And then there's storage, screen, etc.
basically any BT phone that is also 3g should be fine... there are some 3g RAZR models if you are happy with the one you have now.
BTW, I saw they have 8525 refurbs for $150.00 after contract and rebate.... hint hint

Well, my concern is that bluetooth modem services will not work with some phones. As we know companies disable some features of their phones, so I thought it would be better to ask here for a recommendation. I'm trying to avoid going to the store and checking each phone one by one.
I did look at the lineup that ATT offers and they have quite a few with 3G and bluetooth. On the other hand, some devices don't work- having checked here at aximsite, for example I found out that the blackjack doesn't hookup with the axim. I hesitate now about the Samsungs a bit. Does the 8525 offer modem services?
I was able to use my Motorola V600 from pre-Cingular AT&T and after it prematurely died I went back to using my pre-pre-Cingular Sony-Ericsson T616, which also works. I have a data plan from the old days, though.

As far as I know AT&T/Cingular has never disabled bluetooth functionality on their phones. Most regular cellphones that are bluetooth enabled should work...I don't know about smartphones.....
When I was on vacation, I paired my hw6925 with my hx2415 and surfed the internet on my hx2415 (using the GPRS/Edge connection on my hw6925). It worked okay...

It depends on what part of the country you are in and if you travel and of course, I'm sure it will change very rapidly. I travel a fair amount and am pretty happy if I can consistently get an EDGE connection. There are places where it switches back and forth with GPRS and the speed change is noticeable. I also travel to lots off places that don't have the HSDPA, so I haven't missed it. I suspect that will change within the next year.
I know that ATT is trying to get HSDPA everywhere, but I don't know about their schedule. If it is in your area, or a place you travel, (generally metro areas) and you do a lot of internet stuff, definitely go for it. That would be your 3G phones. ATT does carry the RAZR and KRZR 3G phones, as well as the samsungs.
The $150 for a refurb 8525 proved too attractive, so I ordered one. I'll see if it can be tethered to the axim and report. From what I read, it can be connected via the usb cable to a laptop and share its internet connection, so I'm hoping it will work through bluetooth for the axim as well.
It appears a WM6 update is close for the 8525 so I'll play around with tweaking it for a while. Any suggestions for tweaks/hacks for the device? Any hotspot for it like we have with the aximsite? BTW, is this called HTC hermes or TyTN?
Both... and a few others as well. ( Hermes
Also known as: HTC TyTN / XDA trion / MDA Vario II / VPA Compact III / SPV M3100 / Dopod CHT 9000 / Dopod 838 Pro)
There is a good site for hacks and such at xda-devs if you are into that sort of thing.. and I have a decent setup in MyPDA for mine.
Yes you can tether it to a laptop or desktop for internet access (i did for about 2 weeks until I have my cable connected in my apartment) I haven't tried connecting it to an Axim... I'd bet however, that you'll not worry about doing so after a while
The convenience of one device will outweigh the beautiful screen of the Axim after a while.

Using a phone with a data plan to connect via BT to your Axim or laptop. How fast is the internet connection? Is it fast enough to make it worth while? I currently don't have a data plan & GPRS is painfully slow.
in a 3g area... I have gotten over a 900k connection

with wm6, you will use the internet connection center and not DUN. It's pretty easy, it just connects, but it has to be activated on both the phone and the axim.
Apparently, the 8525 still doesn't have the WM6 update, but people are holding their breaths. I'll hold my sd card purchase until it comes out as well, as with WM6, SDHC should be a workable solution.
Regarding tehtering to the axim and laptops, ATT seems to be insistent on having us use an expensive laptop connect type plan. I read posts in their forums that the pda connect plans ($40) are not meant for tethering. Not that everyone takes them seriously, people still seem to use the pda plans and tether, but ATT keeps the threat of "extra charges" alive. I don't know how they can tell, maybe by volume of traffic.
In regards to converged devices, I can't see the attraction- It seems to me that the only things the 8525 can do that I can't with the Axim is take pictures (don't care) make calls (nice enough) and connect to internet anywhere (great if there's 3g coverage, meh otherwise). Axim is still a better PDA, music player (due to storage card capacity), video player, game platform, gps etc. Maybe my opinion will change once I have the device, but right now I am only getting it for the internet connection anywhere. I'll try keeping the 19.99 smarthphone unlimited deal until ATT catches me or scares me enough to get a $40 plan.
Let me also take this opportunity to thank everyone who wrote in. I just wish, like everyone else, Dell would make the X75V.
There are plenty of WM6 updates if you get it direct from HTC and/or XDA-devs... I'm running one now.
Yes, I was disappointed in the lack of internal storage, but SDHC is better than nothing... and Orb helps a bit as well.
I easily pull 60-80mb per month and very little is orb or streaming audio.
