New X50v Owner would like Software Recommendations

Hi,

I have just purchase a used (duh) Dell X50v, and need some recommendations for software packages to round out the machine. I used to own an Axim X5, which died in an accident, and that was replaced with an iPaq 3850. The iPaq is now being replaced with this X50v. I had the iPaq for about 2 years, and had some software on it, which all pretty much seems to be out of date, and will have to be re-purchased.

I am thinking about the following:

1. Spb Pocket +: I had on the iPaq, and liked as a user interface enhancement.

2. Pocket Mechanic (now Pro): What I used for general storage card management.

3. Anhelion and Gamebox Solitare: These may still be usable, I have written PDAmill with copies of my original authorization codes, and asked if they are still legal/usable.

While I was on the Handago site, I noted a few programs that look like good ideas, but I don't have any experience with:

1. Memmaid: Seems to be a memory optimization program. Would the 3.X version of Pocket Mechanic also do most of what this does, or is this a must have in addition to Pocket Mechanic?

2. SK tools: Is this an alternative to Pocket Mechanic?

3. Spb Backup: Seems like AS4.2/WM5 don't back the machine up to the host PC, so I would need a backup program. I saw this, is there a better alternative?

I would also like to get a screen rotation utility (lanscape to portrait and back, never had that on the iPaq) that would be faster than going through Screen Settings, and a registry editor.

Just one question. Are you running wm 2003se or wm5 on it? As far as the screen rotation there's no reg hack necessary in either o/s. Start>Settings>System>Screen. I think you can map a button for this as well if you plan on changing orientation alot.

Sk tools is a must have imo for either o/s as well. Try the trial. I really like the upgrade policy. I purchased my copy at least 3 years ago and he's released continuous upgrades at no extra charge.
I use and recommend spb pocketplus as well but I believe there's freeware that will do nearly the same thing. Same for Resco file explorer.

Mako:

It originally had WM5/A01. I updated on the weekend to WM5/A02. The upgrade seems to have speeded the unit up; I used to get some strange interface lags before the update.

I forgot to say that I will also be downloading Acrobat Reader as soon as I can get around to it.

Most people map a hardware button to the rotate...

license codes carry over to your new devices... the only time when you need to reregister is for software that is device specific, such as software like opera web browser, anything from conduits, tcpmp etc... in this case you just need to shoot them your new authorization code to get reregistered...

as fas as your list of wares, i would stay away from spb pocket pllus as its always been bloaty and resource dependant. i personally use wisbar as a task manager.

pocket mechanic is kinda useless imho... unless you need something to format an sd card or checkdisk something.

pdamill games are great... get em all

avoid handango like the plague. theyre ruthless and treat developers like isht
use pocketgear or mobihand etc

memmaid is ok, but for all thease things stick with skkv sktools... its the best out there and all you need. replaces pocketmechanic and memmaid

spb backup is meh, ok... id reccommend sprite backup. sktools has a backup feature as well

you can pick up a free screen rotation utility out there or purchase nyditot virtual display...

some other things to reccommend would be

sbsh ilauncher (has safe mode availability in addition to quick access to apps)
sbsh pocket weather
sbsh pocket breeze (a must have)
opera web browser (the best out there)
oxios memory (closeapps) free and usefull
pocketmax phonealarm (a must for ppc phone devices)
webis flexmail (the best email client app out there)
google earth mobile (free and works great)
coreplayer (formerly tcpmp... the best video player available)
resco explorer (imho the best file browser)
alternatively virtual explorer (anton tomov)
resco photo viewer (a little nicer than spb imageer)
wififofum2 (free and works on a lot of devices)

and games:

ackys breakout
advanced brain trainer
anthelion 1 and 2
argentum
arvale 1,2, and 3
astraware solitare
atomic cannon
azgard defense
bejeweled 2
astraware bookworm
astraware chuzzle
brainschool
cubis
enslave
gamebox solitare (pdamill)
jokers quest 1 and 2 (pocket napalm)
k-rally
loomies
machines at war (awsome rts)
astraware mazera
"next" and "next level pack 2"
astraware pizelus
skyforce and skyforce reloded
snails
astraware super slyder
tower mogul (pdamill)
warfare incorperated
and finally
esoft word challange

my $.02 and then some:)

Thanks for the recommendations regarding SK tools and MemMaid. I will go with that over Pocket Mechanic Pro, but I think I will stick with Spb Pocket+. PDAMill did get back to me and confirmed that the licenses for Anthelion and Gamebox Solitaire are valid.

I also appreciate the recommendation on Machines at War. I saw the banner ad for it, clicked on the banner, and the game looks like a real winner. That, and maybe Quake, and Anthelion 2 will be the games I end up with, along with the two that I am licensed for.

Impressive list of software you have on your machine. How do you you get all of that in there? Just kidding.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, it was a major help.
