I currently have an Axim X5 basic, and i'm looking to upgrade to a more powerful PDA. I like the Axim line, so i am looking at either the x50v or x51v.
I have 2 questions, first, should I go for the X50v or X51v? Is the v model with Intel graphics worth it? To the best of my knowledge, the only difference between the x50 and x51 is the OS it originally came with and the 51v has 256MB ram instead of 128.
Secondly, which OS is the best? If I get the x50v, should I go with 2003se, wm5, or the hacked wm6? If I get the x51v, is WM5 or the hacked WM6 better?
I have heard of issues with WM5, so I am kind of leaning towards a X50V w/ WM2003SE, but I am unsure.
Any tips, comments, suggestions or ideas?
Edit: I'm not asking for where to get WM6 as I know it's not technically 'legal'. Just curious if anybody has experience with it, and if it is any better than WM2003/WM5.
u can search on ebay for a used x51v which is what i recommend because it is best with wm5 as the x50's aren't and i cant tell u that wm6 is the best because it is an illegal rom and discussion of such is forbidden ,people have had + experiences w/it tho but i wont tell u how to get it.
The best choice would be an x51v. It comes with wm5, which means it runs faster than a x50v upgraded. Wm2003se is a great os, but some developers are abandoning it already. So why would u want to get a nice newer pda, when its os is starting to get old.
And dont discuss wm6 on axims here. Its not that theyre trying to be mean to users, they just dont want Microsoft knocking on chris's door one night.

Matthew I'd go with the x51v if you can get it. WM5 A12 rom is very stable and fast. The main advantage of the x51 is persistent memory, if your battery goes flat you do not lose the data on your axim. If you get an axim still in warranty you will void the warranty if you install the hacked WM6 rom.
I would wait for the HP 210 due out this October. Its features WM6 vs WM5. It has a 4" vga screen and CF plus high speed SD card slots. 128mb of ram and 256mb of rom. Sure makes me think of upgrading sooner than later. If you still want a pre-existing unit of X50v or a X51V I would suggest the X51V.

WM6 would be the obvious choice, if indeed you secure yourself an x51v.
Well the Rom is actually Flash Rom... Some of it is used for the OS, and the rest is available for whatever you want.

Well the Rom is actually Flash Rom... Some of it is used for the OS, and the rest is available for whatever you want.
So the Rom is OS/Storage, and the Ram is the 'working' space for running programs and such? I know PDA's (at least the axim) have 3 types of memory. The OS Space, Built in storage (Not Hard-Reset erased), and Internal Storage (Hard-Reset Erased), plus external storage SD/CF. Hence why I am a bit confused as to which is which.
I just moved up to an X50v. It came with WM5/A01, and there were some strange delays in the interface. I updated it to WM5/A02 (a download from Dell's site), and it seems much better.
Built in Flash (what you are calling ROM) is used to store the OS, and whatever is left over is usable for storing your own software, and I think it also holds temporary files. in the Memory control panel, it is shown as Storage. On my X50v, it shows 90MB total, 40.47 MB in use, and 49.53 MB in use.
The working RAM, which is what you see as Program in the Memory display, is used for programs that actually execute; you cannot, as far as I know, execute programs directly from Storage or SD/CF cards. On my X50V, it shows Total: 49.29MB. In Use: 24.70 MB, and Free: 24.50MB, all this with Active Sync running.
The "missing memory" (specs say that the X50V comes with 128MB Flash/64MB RAM) is used up by the OS and the background tasks that are required to run the OS. You need to try to minimize the amount of Program (ie. RAM) in use, as some programs require a lot of RAM to operate (games like Quake, or Machines at War). Also, a pretty good sized chunk gets used up if you are runnig a wireless connection. There are also some issues with programs not releasing or freeing up all the RAM they were using when they close, so a program like Oxios (free) or SK Tools should be used sometime during each day to free up RAM. If your RAM gets too low, the unit can act funny, or hang.
SD or CF Cards can be used to store programs and files (documents, music, or even video). The X50v is limited to SD only (ie no SDHC cards, unless there is a driver written) cards, which go to 4GB. SDHC cards seem to start at 4GB, and already exist in 8GB form. CF cards come in higher memory capacities than that, but a lot of people will use the CF slot for I/O (GPS, modem, or wired ethernet cards).

Kostas
That makes sense, the problem with my x5 is it is slow (I have a 512MB SD card filled with games, and the Games Menu takes like 3 minutes to scroll thru and load), and I can't run most programs, because it hovers at around ~5MB free program memory. I'm really looking at the X50V because it's cheaper, but I can't find any for sale under $200 :(.
I realize I probably am not supposed to ask this here, but does anybody have a x50v w/ battery & charger they are willing to part with for ~$150?

i wish my job was payin me enough so id be able to buy it.

It should be illegal to copy a device like that!
I guess its dell's loss, seeing that they didnt want to make pdas anymore, so hp is going to take all those former x50v/x51v purchasers, b/c this thing is just as good, with wm6 LEGALLY!!!
