Worried Wireless Connects, Internet doesn't

Hi,

Axim 51V A12

My Axim connects fine to my wireless network, except when any apps like a browser try to connect to the Internet it doesn't work.

Interestingly under the "Tools" in the WLAN Utility I can see I've been provided with an IP address. I can ping IP external addresses but when I ping Google I get the error - "Please check the destinated IP address..."

What's wierd is that this suddenly started happening. A few months ago when it happened after a hard reset it worked. I have subsequently tried a few hard resets and upgraded the ROM to A12 but still it doesn't work.

When I have the Axim on the cradle, it works fine.

I believe my wireless network is properly setup. I have two laptops that use it and even a buddy connects to it with his iphone when he visits.

Please help This is killing me!

Terry

If you can ping outside IPs but not domain names, it seems likely that your problem is the DNS settings. Typically on a home router, the router's IP is assigned as the DNS and it passes the request on to your ISP.

You can set your device to use the actual ISP's DNS but it requires setting a static IP on your PPC which means you'd have problems attaching to other networks.

Try this. Go to:

Start > Settings > Connections > Network Cards
Set 'My network card connections to' to 'The Internet' (though, it may be a good idea to do this for both 'The Internet' and 'Work').
Select 'Dell Axim X51 WLAN Wireless Adapter' then 'Name servers' at the bottom. Set DNS to 208.67.222.222 and Alt. DNS to 208.67.220.220 then click OK to close all the windows and soft-reset your Axim.

The name servers I gave you are from OpenDNS which work great :)

akiller, THANK YOU so much.
That was so simple!
I once had no problem using my Axim on my wireless network, then I was elsewhere & messed up my settings. I haven't had the time to try & figure out what the problem was. Then I stumbled on your instructions & voila!!
You are a gem.
