EXTREME!!!! router problems

ok i have an 802.11b wirless router which i purchased 25 months ago, and now i am having some trouble with it, well what it is doing is it is losing the connection so to restore it i have to find the CD for it and then go through the initial setup again for it to work i used to have to do this once a month if that, now i find myself doing it several times a week like today i did it 4 times, i updated the firmware and everything and it is still happening, any solution before i have to buy a new one which is what i do not want to do

If you happen to be using bittorrent while this happens, you will have to lower the number of simultaneous connections. Alternatively, invest in a router that supports dd-wrt.

Is it possible that someone else is using your connection? Is your network secured?

And have you tried the basic router troubleshooting such as changing the channel, moving the router away from cordless phones/microwaves, etc.?

BTW, have you tried rebooting the router instead of going through the entire setup procedure each time you lose the connection? It should be faster.

just resetting the router alone doesn't fix the problem ,and sometimes even the setup procedure doesn't work,I would get a msg that says unable to connect to the router! and I have to unplug and reset the router several times to get it passed that.

It could be someone's 2.4ghz cordless phone. My Dlink router had lots of issues with it. You might be able to change the channel on it. I eventually picked up a Linksys which works a little bit better.

its both the wireless and wired signal that goes out so i dont think that has anything to do with it

Real quick question for you...the computer you are accessing the router with does it have windows Vista on it? I ask b/c Vista has issues just like that. The OS drops the connection for no reason.

Tried replacing the router? Seriously - I think your router's got some problems, especially if it's happening after a firmware update.

Yep, I had an old Netgear 802.11b awhile ago, I couldn't connect to the internet all of the sudden. It wasn't sporadically losing connection, but it just didn't work.

I replaced with a WGR614 Netgear, and its been working fine, except I started losing connection on both wired and wireless. Turns out it was overheating like heck. Ended up cutting it open and installing a fan. Works perfectly, no problems since.
