Axim X51v directly to Ethernet possible?

Hi, new to thread. I have a Dell Axim X51V, 624mhz, on W5.0. I often stay in hotels where there is no wireless, but free internet acess via ethernet in the rooms.
I have a Axim to USB sync cable and recently bought a multi pack of USB to Ethernet RJ45 adapters.
I thought I would be able to simply connect to the internet via a Ethernet modem by simply plugging my Sync cable into the axim, and the other end into one of the RJ45 adapters, then directly into the broadband ethernet modem, as I would like to when I'm away, but cannot connect.
Is there any way of doing this as I am not sure of the settings to input, i.e. in Settings-Connections-Network Cards, its defaulted to 'NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver', with an option below of 'Virtual Ethernet Intermediate Miniport', have tried each in turn but still cant connect.
Is it possible to connect to the Internet this way, i.e. directly from sync cable to ethernet, or am I hoping too much.
It would be handy as it would save me having to bring my laptop with me when I'm away, and I have gone to the trouble of buying (albeit at not too much cost) the pack of RJ45 ethernet adapters.
Oh, by the way, I have tried several of the adapters as some look like they are crossover types.
Thanks,
Jon

I don't think you can connect the way you want.
The Sync connection on the Ax doesn't have the correct hardware for that.
You can buy a CF card Ethernet adapter.
Or better still, you can get a travel wifi adapter that will plug into the hotel socket and then you can surf from the bed.

I think that Either you want an ethernet cf card (+wm5 drivers)

or a pocket wireless router..

but compact wireless is a winner, except for when you forget to get it when you check out of the hotel

Many thanks, both are fairly rare (well on ebay that is), I will probably go for the ethernet cf card for weight and space.
Are theise hard to set up, and what configuration in the settings will I have to use?

I have used the CF ethernet cards and sometime they work and sometime you still can't connect. I have not tried the little wireless routers. They look simple to use just plug the ethernet cable into the port in the hotel room and then connect wireless with the PocketPC. But the wireless router sometimes needs to be configured and I do not know how you do that from the PocketPC. If you had to change the configuration while on the road is that possable or is the wireless router just a passthrough and all setup occurs at the PocketPC?

The best way to handle hooking up to wired hotel internet connections is to use a pocket router. I've been very happy with this one:

Amazon.com: Linksys WTR54GS Wireless G Travel Router with Speedbooster: Electronics

Just set it up before you leave, making sure you setting either WEP or WPA, and then when you get to the hotel just plug in the ethernet and plug it in, and away you go.

I like the pocket router since I can use it for either the Ax or a laptop.

I use a D-Link DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router - 54Mbps, 802.11g.

It is 51.99 on Tiger direct. Hook it to the hotels ethernet, and make your on WIFI net work. works great. Use it for laptop, and AX.

How can you set it up in advance unless you know whether the hotel uses PPOE and DHCP/Fixed IP??

You setup the connection from the Axim to the router before you go. You make sure you have setup the WEP, or WPA settings, MAC address filtering, etc.

Then, when you get there you plug in the router and login to it using the Axim's browser (PIE or Opera). On the setup screen you tell it the type of external internet connection, and can even put in login and passwords for those types of connections.
