From the time I started using the x51V I have noticed a problem with intermittent failure of programs to fully close. As often as I would hit the OK button more functions of the PDA would freeze up and I would end up having to do a soft reset to get back to work. I have managed to narrow down the problem and a marginal work around.
MY OBSERVATIONS:
I am running Wisbar Advanced 3. If I have a program running and the Axim x51V auto-shuts off then wakes up to an alarm I the program that was running at shut off will not fully close unless I turn off the PDA manually, then turn it on, and then close it again from the OK button.
I have tried this without Wisbar loaded at all and the problem is still apparent but you must go directly to the Memory Utility to see that the program is locked and will not close unless the PDA is shut down manually and restarted.
What makes this most frustrating is that usually all data that was being worked on is frequently lost!!! Usually I notice this with TextMaker and PhatPad and PocketInformant (all loaded in main memory).
I have tried this with the ROM that shall be known as the ROM that shall not be discussed here and with A17. I also noticed similar behavior with A12 but I do not want to reload A12 and test it out. This problem is one of the reasons that I have tried the other ROMs.
It is a strange characteristic of all Windows Mobile operating systems that clicking on OK or X does not shut down any program. It merely minimizes it and it continues running in the background.
This,of course, uses up RAM where the programs run, until eventually you do not have enough RAM left to run any more.
I suggest that you use SBSH iLauncher. This has an excellent Task Manager (opened by tapping and holding the top RH corner). It allows you to fully shut down any or all running programs.
With data programs like TextMaker you have to save data before you shut down the program or else you will lose it.
Nope you missed my point. I have used WIN Mobile for many years and know about the quirks. I use Wisbar as my program manager. It shuts things down just fine. This is specifically a problem with auto-shut off and notification. It only happens with the combination. The program will start to close then hang. If I fail to shut down the device immediately manually and then keep using the device the pda will freeze. This has been an ongoing problem. With my x51V. I use the device for about 6 hours out of every day as a note taking and report writing device. I also have about 7 to 8 alarms going off during the day. As long as I manually shut down the device I have not lock up issues. As long as no notification has gone off after auto-shut down I have no issues. It is the combination of the auto-shut down and the notification going off with a running program that I have issues with lock-up or failure to fully unload the program (data loss, it will not save the file properly).
My apologies. I clearly misunderstood your post.
I have an X50v running WM 2003 SE, so I do not know WM 5. Nor do I use Wisbar, so I am afraid that I cannot help you.
Do you have a lock password set? I had similar issues with my x51v and had to disable the lock function. I have had virtually no problems in the last 2 months since I no longer use the lock function.
Another thing to check is your notification queue. You can download a free utility from Dell to delete duplicate notifications. Download here.
Yes this is related to notifications but only it the Axim auto powers off. The notification cue is free of duplicates and erroneous references. I can consistently duplicate the bug buy setting the auto- off to one minute starting up TextMaker, PhatPad, or Opera, setting an alarm to go off in three Minutes, and then letting it power off and start the alarm. If I try to close the program it will hang and, in the case of the TextMaker and PhatPad applications no data will be saved. If I try to run other applications or it I hit other menu items then little by little the Axim will freeze up. The only way to clear the memory is to immediately manually power down then power up. then hit ok again and the program will then close but data will be lost. the problem has been observed on every ROM I have tried so far. I have done multiple hand resets and tried all available roms.
Regarding the password protection, I have experienced this problem with auto-shut off and notifications regardless of the password protection. I must say that WM6 password utility is very buggy: it persistently forces a return to today screen at turn on, it does not play nice with Sprite Back Up, it will occasionally forget your password on soft resets causing you to hard reset the device, and more exciting things that reduce stability. For these reasons I had to stop playing with Football A03 and I am now sticking with M17. The only thing that is frustrating me now is this.

Reason: Added response to password protection
I have noticed similar behavior with Netfront 34 build 009. If the program is left running when the device is shutdown the program will hang when the device is turned on again.
