A12 is the latest model. Shows its newer. I would think the upgrades (even though I don't know what they did) would be a positive thing in the axim.:hide:
The step-by-step from A06 to A12 can be used from A01? That is great.
Has anyone done this? The author of the step-by-step says he cannot elaborate on whether it will work or not, since he does not have a A01, but if someone does have one, and has used it, and it works, I would like to hear about that.
What could happen if you try this A06 to A12 and it doesn't work? Can you go back? From a previous backup? Or is your Axim a BRICK?
I just did it and it worked fine. Since it wasn't my machine I had no fear. I have three more to do it on, plus mine. First though, I need to ask a question about backups, so that will be a separate post.
There is always a risk when upgrading a ROM.
I upgraded from 1 to 12, took about 10 minutes and had no problems at all.
Others have had problems.
Make a back up of all your data, make sure you have all the reg codes etc for all your software.
Plug your Ax into the main power.
But the main thing, if it is working fine for you with A01 there may be no benefit to an upgrade.

Yes, this is true, but many small bug fixes go into these things. I'm installing and supporting an app that I've written so I'd really like to have the Axims as close to identical as possible. I've held off on upgrading mine because I saw no real reason to do it, but I might as well since it's the perfect opportunity. If I brick it, I can just use one of the others.
I thank you for your postings. I am first going to do the ROM update on a A06, so that I can see how it works. Then, when I see that it makes the improvements that I am looking for (ie. the build number being high enough to allow the new Windows Mobile Office 6.1). This is my main reason for doing this. I have it on mine and I like it. Also, this allows the ability to use the new extension that will be in the Mac Office 2008 when it comes out in January, and which is in the Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows, already.
There are other programs, too, that need a higher build also.
So, if this makes the build around the 14957.2.3.1 that I have on my Dell Axim X51v A12, then I will do it on the other ones.
Thank you for your input. I hope that I didn't hijack this thread, but since I too have wanted the answer to this problem, I thought it redundant to post the same question.
Just to be complete, some of the machines were A03, they also upgraded fine. One weird thing though; we've been having work done on our network and they screwed it up so that I didn't have admin rights. That caused the updating to fail half-way through. Once the rights were restored, everything went fine. So, if you don't have admin rights on the machine, it might not upgrade the Axim.
I'd like to upgrade my x51v to A12, the question is: do I have to re-install programs once I upgrade, or can I use the restore to put back my data from a backup? And where do I get the ROM file?
Or, just type Download R129272.exe into google and it's the first hit (I think).
You're going to need to reinstall the programs and any data that resides in main memory. Obviously the SD and CF cards will be fine (you DON'T want those installed while you do the upgrade) so any programs on them will also likely be ok, but they won't show up under Programs or shortcuts so you'll have to start them via File Explorer unless you recreate the shortcuts. It's best to reinstall everything if you can. Anything that uses the registry is going to be messed up because the registry is wiped.
Do two backups, one with everything and one with only the PIM type stuff. At least the PIM stuff will restore, although it might be a bit flakey while doing the restore, you'll find that the appointments and such do come back. You can try restoring everything, it probably won't work but once you have A12 running you can just to a full reset and clean it up. Let us know what happens.
Do the backups to the SD or CF card, of course. They won't do you any good in main memory once you wipe it!
