Darren,
No, Windows backup will not allow you to do this. You'll be able to restore the content that's handled by ActiveSync when you get the new device but you are most likely going to need to re-install all your applications manually. I think there are some backup applications that you can purchase for your device (help me out here, guys) that will back everything up including the registry - but unless you have one of those programs you'll be better off to just "rebuild".
Making a back up is a good thing, but not always foolproof.
Make sure you have all your application data available in case you have to reinstall. Reg codes etc.

I second the two backups suggestion, and also the reg codes suggestion.
As a general rule, I tend to keep all the installers I've ever tried handy in a folder, along with all my user settings in a nice little password protected rar file...
Then again, I'm paranoid enough about security to have a fingerprint scanner on my pc ;)
I went through the same thing and sure enough when I got my new axim it was running A12 so I ended up having to reinstall a lot of stuff manually rather than just use the trust old back up that I had. Just something else for you to think about.
Part of the return process at Dell seems to be a ROM flash to A12. The unit I got back during this past summer came to me with A12 already installed. I agree with nateb, if that is the case and your existing unit is not at the same ROM level all you can install from a backup would be your data. A reinstall of your unique applications would give you the greatest change for not having any issues from one ROM to another. In my case my unit was already at A12 and so I was able to use my ROM backup to install onto my replacement unit. I use Spb Backup and all worked great.
