Bluetooth dial-up with a WM6 phone

Hi,

I've had an Axim x50v for years, and for years I've been using my Nokia phone(s) as a GRPS modem over bluetooth, all was fine. But I've recently got a new phone, a HP iPAQ 514 which runs Windows Mobile 6.

MS seem to have removed the ability to use the phone as a bluetooth modem in WM6, the only feature available is bluetooth PAN. So I can no longer get my Axim to recognise it as a modem.

Is there any way round this problem or am I stuck??

BTW I'm running WM5 A02 on my Axim.

I had a very detailed reply and my browser ate it, so here goes I'll try again.

I'm assuming that you have the widcomm BT stack and that you get to it by the BT manager that lists all the things that you may want to do via BT including Accessing the Internet through a phone.

First pair the devices. You will have to make both devices discoverable and make sure they each recognize each other.

First on the Axim. Using the BT Manager, select access internet using phone for new connection type, make sure your phone is on and discoverable. One of the services should be internet sharing. Select this, but you do not have to change your network type, or configure the bt modem. Select this and finish. It should make a short cut to internet sharing. Do not select the short cut yet.

Now go to the phone. On my strtrk, I have to go to all the way to the last start screen and find the accessories folder. In that folder there is the internet sharing. When I select that, I am disconnected. I connect and it asks whether I want to connect to the pc (which is the axim) I confirm, it uses the BT pan connection and it says I'm connected.

Then I go back to the Axim and select the internet using phone icon and have it connect. It connects and then I am good to go.

I'm sure that much of this could be automated, but since I do not keep BT on all the time for either device, I have to go through the initial start up all the time. I do not have to pair the device each time, however.

My first write-up was much better.

Good luck with this. I actually find this much easier than the bt modem because I don't have to change my network settings or so a reset. I also have to empty my browser cache much less often.

Thanks for the reply - the problem is I have put WM5 on my Axim so I don't have the Widcomm BT stack - just the MS one.
There seems to be no option for PAN in the MS BT stack.
I don't have a "Bluetooth PAN User Driver" in my list of network adapters, is this normal on a Axim with WM5?

This is crazy MS remove a feature from their own OS (the DUN) but also don't supply any alternative in their BT stack, aaarrgh!

Ok
So I've installed the "unofficial" Broadcomm BT stack on my Axim.
I can now connect to my phone as a Network Access Point when I enable the Internet Connection sharing on my phone. But...

I can't access anything on the internet.

I've set my network cards to connect to "The Internet" and set the "Bluetooth PAN User Driver" (which now appears) in my list to automatically get it's address. But no joy.

If I connect my XP laptop to the phone using the connection sharing it works fine and my laptop can access the Internet.

I'm very, very close to simply chucking the Axim in the bin and buying something newer with WM6 on it. Grrrrrr

You're completely right I don't really need to connect the Axim up anymore now I have the HP 514, but over xmas I did have the need to do it, and wanted to get it working. I didn't think TBH that it would be this much hassle!

It's not the Axim at fault it's the WM6 phone. For a laugh I fired up my old Nokia phone and got that connected to the Axim and on the Internet in about 2 minutes.

If you don't want to use the hacked Widcomm BT stack, you'll need to use the DUN patch co-authored by me. See my related tutorial at http://www.aximsite.com/boards/tips-...last-must.html .
