Aximsitex50icon 128mb RAM Upgrade

Hi guys,
I bet most of you guys have heard about the 128mb RAM upgrade from PPCTechs for the Axim X51v; well, I bought the upgrade.

I know some of you (was including myself), are wondering the speed of the device after the upgrade. I have taken the boot time before the upgrade. I'll tell you all what the boot time after the update.

I'm just crossing my fingers that everything goes all right. I'll make sure I'll buy insurance with my shipping.

I'm just starting this thread to compare the before and after boot times. I have found nothing like this yet on the internet. This will be interesting to release the info. It is good on my part, and PPCTechs part. I can't wait till they send my the shipping info I need.

Thanks Mobilitysite (really Chris Leckness)! If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't know about this upgrade. I'm glad your running this great community; because your doing a great job at it!

Thanks,

I had 128 mb RAM upgrade done with PPCTech 9 mounts ago. Very happy with it. I never worry about memory anymore. Unfortunately I didn't measure boot time before upgrade, so I cannot compare. I am very interested in your results.
In general I haven't noticed any problems or slow down with my device after upgrade, but it is interesting to see the numbers.

You'll see the numbers soon. ;)

Yeah, I really worry about memory now. I just finished my backup, and Sprite Backup said it was backing up 146mb of data. My PDA is very important to me. :)

I'm going to be one happy guy once I get my PDA back... I am still waiting for their reply. Doubt it'll be today because they are off today, like most companies are...

Thanks,

This'll answer it.

Call that fast serivce!

Although I have to admit that it does scare you sending your PDA through the mail, and for me, all the way accross the USA. Well, I know it's in good hands. ;)

I'll post the results soon. But to be honest with you guys, I'm pretty sure the PDA will not run any faster. It just wont lock up when running multiple applications. But, it should make it a little faster because now Windows Mobile doesn't have to clean it's RAM as often...

Thanks,

I'm curious as to what affect the RAM upgrade has on Opera 8.65. When you get your Axim back, I'd be interested in how "snappy" Opera feels when using Flash, specifically Youtube.

Hmm, I also wonder about this question. I really never had Youtube working under Opera before. It would be interesting on how fast it loads.

When I get my Axim back, I'll see how fast it is. ;)

It should load especially fast if you use a RAM Disk for Opera's cache. You may also be able to increase the devices performance by increasing file system cache and font cache using sktools or memaid.

I have had the 128Mb upgrade for nearly a year, and I must say, if you are using a BT headset, this goes an EXTREMELY long way toward improving performance. Streaming audio is phenomenal, and crisp. Also, there is a significant improvement when playing any kind of video-based media, be it flash, or video files. TCPMP really steps up to the plate, and delivers level one performance. Internet page loading times also decrease. Usage of BT peripherals (Keyboard, and Mouse) also see significant decreases in latency times. I am shocked more people haven't bought this upgrade already. It ought to be mandatory, as soon as you buy this device, upgrade the RAM. It is unarguably the best investment I made for my Axim.

Do you guy's make any changes to the registry after the RAM upgrade; such as increasing the pagepool size?

Hi Speedy,

No, we don't make any changes to the registry.

I'm not going to go in far detail with ROM cooking, but Speedy, in order to change the page pool size, you need to modify the ROM (NBO) even before you flash it via SD Image Flasher.

Back to topic.

I have just recived my PDA, and here are the numbers.

__________________________
BEFORE RAM UPGRADE:

Boot time: 53.8 Seconds

RAM left: 27.9MB
__________________________

AFTER RAM UPGRADE:

Boot time: 34.2 Seconds

RAM left: 92.7MB (with Pocket Weather and iLauncher)
__________________________

Difference:

Boot time: 19.6 Seconds - 158% Change

RAM: 64.8MB - 132% Change (thanks JakeRich)

BTW, I would say Opera is much faster! It loads a tad bit slower than PIE, but it is very fast. It is a lot faster than before. But, I wasn't able to test it on Youtube. Said I didn't have flash... Go figure.

Hope these numbers helps any one.

My review:
I was very scared about sending in my PDA (Dell Axim X51v) into PPCTechs. But, they helped me get it to them safely, and they kept me on track with everything. Sue has kept me up-to-date on what is happening. I was "PDAless" for a little less than a week (I shipped out my PDA with FedEx 2 day shipping). PPCTechs applied the screen protector I ordered for no charge at all! Screen protectors can be a pain to install... Anyways, when I get my PDA back, I am just shocked. After I restored all of my data via Sprite Backup (wonderful program; highly suggest it), my Axim booted faster than it previously did, and I have about 90mb of RAM left (I have many today plugins running.)

I am very pleased with their service, and I highly suggest their RAM upgrade! Sue, Jose, you guys are great people! Keep up the work you are already doing! You guys have a wonderful company there; and if I ever need another Pocket PC related item, I will look at you first.

Thanks,
