I have done numerous hard resets on the device...including last night when every time I changed the channel I would do a hard reset, reconnect, and verify the settings. I have thought that maybe it was a setting on my laptop, so I have gone through all of those settings and haven't found anything that could be causing this, although I am not much of a network guru, so I may be looking in the wrong places. I currently have a WEP key for the connection, but even without one I get the same results. If I assign an IP address to the device, I can get a connection, but can't browse my network files in file explorer...so I have set the device to DHCP.
Now, this is something weird that JUST happened...first some background:
I essentially followed this guide to connect adhoc, except that I went an extra step and chose channel 10 for an adhoc connection (may not have been the best channel...I got the clue from another posting):
Considering Ad Hoc Networks - For Dummies
The other day, I set up an adhoc connection called "AHLaptop", programmed to connect on channel 10. I was working on it at my house with disconnects/reconnects every once in a while. I then went to my office, and I could get a connection, but it kept disconnecting IMMEDIATELY. So, I ended up completely scrapping "AHLaptop" adhoc connection from my laptop (I deleted it from preferred networks), and created a new one "dellMobile". I have been working from 3 different locations on getting this to work, and have even unplugged my router at home so that I was sure that my router was not getting involved in the connection (I noticed that it was being used as the DHCP server at one point, and I wanted a more controlled environment, so I unplugged it).
I have not been in my office in 2 days, and "AHLaptop" has not even showed up as an available network. Now, I am in my office, and all of the sudden I am getting "AHLaptop" again. I ignored it at first, and tried to connect to "dellMobile"...same disconnect problem. Then, I decided to take a chance to see what "AHLaptop" does...and what do you know?... I am connected, and there are NO disconnects. I am obviously connected through the router somehow, although the connection is displaying as adhoc. AND, what is really weird is that I connected with the Axim first, and was not connected with my laptop...and I did not have to put in a WEP key. However, when I connected with my laptop, I had to put in a WEP key. After both were connected, I was able to browse for files on my laptop. I can then disconnect my laptop, and the Axim stays connected.
I'm not sure what I did, but I like it that the Axim stays connected. I have the SAME Linksys router at home, and have not been able to stay connected. And, as I said, the computers are both displaying that it is an adhoc connection. Can anyone help me to understand what happened so that I can set up the same thing at home, or at a friends, or anywhere?
If possible, I would like to set it up so that a router is not used so that I am not dealing with all of the quirks of different routers. However, if I cannot figure out the settings of my computer so that the connection does not keep renewing, then I will take the router config...if I can figure out what I did and replicate it.
Is there anywhere in my computer that I can set the network card to NOT renew an IP address for an adhoc connection? As I said, I am connecting DHCP, so my computer must be acting as the DHCP server in the connection. If there is a way to do this...how do I make it so that the router does not get involved? I have not planned the router to get involved at all...and it happened anyway.
Sorry for the long post...thought I should leave some background. I'm not very good with the networking part, but I have tried a lot of things!
Thanks for your help!
