wireless disconnecting

Hi, I am having a problem with my wlan disconnecting, then reconnecting on my axim x51v. I have created an adhoc computer-to-computer network with my computer, so no router is involved (although there is generally one close by). The PDA connects fine, I am able to tool around for maybe a minute, then the connection disconnects and reconnects again (and assigns a new IP, DHCP). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Disable Power Save in the WLAN;
Try a different channel for the connection.

I just went through all of the channels...the longest time connected was 2 minutes on channel 8. I verified that the device reset the channel on each test (it kept wanting to default to 6).

My network card and my connection are both set to connect to "work". "Disable WLAN to conserve power" is NOT clicked.

I have no idea where to look next!

This is a dramatic step but you may want to do a hard reset so you have a fresh unit with out any possible issues. At that point only set up the wireless connection prior to sync and see if you get different results. There is also the possibility that the unit has a hardware defect.

It's also possible the PC that you are connecting to is causing the disconnect. I'd look through it's settings a bit for clues.

I have done numerous hard resets on the device...including last night when every time I changed the channel I would do a hard reset, reconnect, and verify the settings. I have thought that maybe it was a setting on my laptop, so I have gone through all of those settings and haven't found anything that could be causing this, although I am not much of a network guru, so I may be looking in the wrong places. I currently have a WEP key for the connection, but even without one I get the same results. If I assign an IP address to the device, I can get a connection, but can't browse my network files in file explorer...so I have set the device to DHCP.

Now, this is something weird that JUST happened...first some background:
I essentially followed this guide to connect adhoc, except that I went an extra step and chose channel 10 for an adhoc connection (may not have been the best channel...I got the clue from another posting): Considering Ad Hoc Networks - For Dummies

The other day, I set up an adhoc connection called "AHLaptop", programmed to connect on channel 10. I was working on it at my house with disconnects/reconnects every once in a while. I then went to my office, and I could get a connection, but it kept disconnecting IMMEDIATELY. So, I ended up completely scrapping "AHLaptop" adhoc connection from my laptop (I deleted it from preferred networks), and created a new one "dellMobile". I have been working from 3 different locations on getting this to work, and have even unplugged my router at home so that I was sure that my router was not getting involved in the connection (I noticed that it was being used as the DHCP server at one point, and I wanted a more controlled environment, so I unplugged it).

I have not been in my office in 2 days, and "AHLaptop" has not even showed up as an available network. Now, I am in my office, and all of the sudden I am getting "AHLaptop" again. I ignored it at first, and tried to connect to "dellMobile"...same disconnect problem. Then, I decided to take a chance to see what "AHLaptop" does...and what do you know?... I am connected, and there are NO disconnects. I am obviously connected through the router somehow, although the connection is displaying as adhoc. AND, what is really weird is that I connected with the Axim first, and was not connected with my laptop...and I did not have to put in a WEP key. However, when I connected with my laptop, I had to put in a WEP key. After both were connected, I was able to browse for files on my laptop. I can then disconnect my laptop, and the Axim stays connected.

I'm not sure what I did, but I like it that the Axim stays connected. I have the SAME Linksys router at home, and have not been able to stay connected. And, as I said, the computers are both displaying that it is an adhoc connection. Can anyone help me to understand what happened so that I can set up the same thing at home, or at a friends, or anywhere?

If possible, I would like to set it up so that a router is not used so that I am not dealing with all of the quirks of different routers. However, if I cannot figure out the settings of my computer so that the connection does not keep renewing, then I will take the router config...if I can figure out what I did and replicate it.

Is there anywhere in my computer that I can set the network card to NOT renew an IP address for an adhoc connection? As I said, I am connecting DHCP, so my computer must be acting as the DHCP server in the connection. If there is a way to do this...how do I make it so that the router does not get involved? I have not planned the router to get involved at all...and it happened anyway.

Sorry for the long post...thought I should leave some background. I'm not very good with the networking part, but I have tried a lot of things!

Thanks for your help!
