Although this works for some non essential files I have had no luck deleting any programs from the bin. I am not sure how to find all the associated files with programs and then there is the problem of registry keys that must be deleted. So, this has been minimally useful for me. If new information continues to build in this thread then a sticky may be helpful, otherwise, it has just been a little gimmick for me.

Is there anything that can be removed to help stabilize WM5?
I keep having apps close while I am using them for no apparent reason.
Like, Textmaker, their forums mention this is a memory issue with WM5 (this will happen when I am working with a small file (1, 2, 3 K, and I have plenty of memory like 15M.
I have other programs spontaneously close in the same way, like XNView and Total Commander.

So, I'm thinking perhaps removing particular parts of the os that cause this would fix this!?!?!?!?

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out how to edit the registry. Once I get a solution, I will post it as soon as I can.

You could try decreasing the pagepool, but I can't think of anything else that could help you.

TextMaker takes lots of Ram to run well. 15 is often not enough for me. I use TextMaker all the time. I keep my memory available to at least 20 when I am working with significant documents. Even at that it is kind of slow, especially with lots of graphic information on pages. 128 meg of ram really sounds good for this type of work to me but it is a bit to expensive to warrant the upgrade for me. This is exactly why I want to dump the built in office applications like word, excel, PPT, and IE. I could use the extra Ram. For editing MortScript Macros, I use the built in text editor in Total Commander. It is in the bottom tool bar-the icon with the page and the red pen. It works great.

I'm using Textmaker for taking notes, and the files I'm using are small, text only, usually 2 or 3 pages.
Thanks for the tips, I'll look at freeing up RAM before any rom changes.
And, I've been using Total Commander, and NEVER noticed it had a built in editor! It looks good.

Steven855: Were you talking to me? What is pagepool?
(thanks)

From what I understand, the pagepool is basically a cache built into ram to handle (temporary) data (before you permanently save the changes to flash rom or a storage card. You can edit the amount of ram that Windows Mobile uses for the pagepool. Decreasing the pagepool increases the amount of ram used to run programs (Cravus, that might solve your ram problem). Likewise increasing the pagepool increases the amount of ram Windows Mobile uses to store temporary data. To modify the amount of ram used for the pagepool, please see Change PagePool for better speed on IPAQ hx4700/2xxx, dellx51(v) - Brighthand.com Smartphone and PDA Discussion Forums and follow the instructions for the X51(v). This method also works on the X50(v) WM5 roms as well (I have done this on more than one occasion). You will need a hex editor and your axim's nb0 file for the job. I recommend HxD for the job, found at HxD - Freeware Hex Editor and Disk Editor | mh-nexus. To flash the rom with the modified pagepool for the X50 series, please see my X50 flashing sticky.

This thread shows you how to edit the registry

Beta: WM5 ROM editing tool - xda-developers

You basically have to convert default.hv to a text file, make your changes, and convert back to a .hv file.

A few things to remember:
File needs to be saved as unicode.
Paths need to be double back-slashed, e.g. "\\Windows\\Start Menu".
Need to have "REGEDIT4" as the first line.
Values need to be indented by 2 spaces.
The final line needs to be a blank line.

I've been having problems trying to separate OEM and SYS in rom dump. I really can't work on the kitchen until that is fixed.

1.prepare_imgfs.exe *.nb0
then you can get imgfs_raw_data.bin and imgfs_removed_data.bin
2.viewimgfs.exe imgfs_raw_data.bin
now you can see a dump folder
3.PKGTool.exe, and select your dump folder
then you can see the separate OEM and SYS folder in the dump

till now I have no problems, but to the XIP folder I have no idea
