Then it may be an interfering signal (other networks, cordless phones and microwaves are common problems) that may be corrected by changing the channel (you'll need to do this on the laptop).
Also, there may be some setting on the laptop that is causing it. IMO, adhoc connections are more trouble than they are worth.
