X51v Action Button not Working

OK. So I consider myself a Windows Mobile veteran having owned Windows Mobile Devices ever since the original HP Jornada. That clever H/PC with the touchscreen and keyboard. I have owned my X51v for about 2 years and love it. I have never met a better PPC (though I'm eyeing that HP iPaq 210 pretty hard).
Here's the issue: I was playing with the programs to change my button behavior. I tried the button enhancer built into SPB Pocket Plus and I tried HButton. After tinkering with this for about 2 weeks now my Action button doesn't work!
what's odd about that is neither of these programs are able to recognize the Action button and configure it. so now the only way to launch a program is to tap it on the screen. not a big deal, but controlling Tomtom in the car is much easier with the NavPad than with screen presses.
I'm not even sure where to begin on this one, can someone give me a kick in the right direction?

I was trying to resolve this in a non-destructive manner.
Besides, the Action button works in all other applications that specifically map that button. For example, in Pocketmusic Action=Mute and it works fine. In Resco Explorer Action=Activate and that works fine as well.
The only place that the Action Button is not working is on the Today screen.
does anyone know the registry keys that govern the key mappings?
