chance on legal WM6?

Hi!

I feel a bit bad that I come up with this topic again - I know some people do not like it a lot but I would be interested if anybody believes that there might be a legal upgrade for X51V to WM6?

I have seen for example here: Dell Axim X51v Windows Mobile 6 UPGRADE - Dell IdeaStorm

that some people still believe in something like that might happen.

An illegal ROM is not a solution for me but I believe that I am not the only one who would be willing to pay for the upgrade even I read that DELL does not have to pay for it (that is rumours ...). So on DELL's side it would just be the developing cost for adjusting the ROM to the X51V.

I know that some people here got good connection to DELL - so I wonder if there is some more info on the probability for this to hapen ...

I think a good point is that some people might refrain from buying anything at all from DELL if this does not happen but in opposite people would be quite thankful still customers if DELL is doing it ...

regards
Daniel

Slim and None are your chances.

Dell is however to introduce a Phone and it will have WM6 on it. Thats where they see the market going. If you want a legal WM6 device try a HP 211 for about $450.

i think dell saw the pda field as a dying one, and decided to get out of it. They figured companies like verison and at&t would sell pda phones.

And after the wm5 upgrade for the x50 put them in a bunch of problems, they probably didnt want to do this again. Although im sure it wouldnt be as bad.

Theyve also waited too long. If they were planning a wm6 release we would have seen it by now.

Yep... 6.1 is coming out soon as a minor upgrade... But any new devices in the works for the next year or so will be designed around WM7.

The effort Dell (or any OEM) would have to put into development and support to upgrade a 2 or 3 year old device to a newer OS would be wasted in comparison to the ROI in a NEW device to be developed and sold

Actually it may be possible, you'd need to buy a developer licence from microsoft 10K, then buy client licenses.., then build it to run on the axim.

Dell probably would have to pay for the licenses. and they would have to support it, and retrain the telephone support droids etc.. And as it won't generate revinue they won't do it.

Or if you're me and your company has a full MSDN license, you're in with a chance for free ;)

The WM licenses for clients would be the only issue (and I can happily justify buying one based on the performance increases reported elsewhere).

Performance reported elsewhere are terrific. WM6 is the OS that the X51V should have had installed onto it by a release from Dell.

Not true, WM6 is probably the best and most stable OS for the X51v. Still not gonna happen (personally I'd install the hacked version if I still had mine).
