ikehike,
Further response to your post:

"If it is connected to another router in your home, then you can use it as an AP but the home router should be assigning the IP to the Axim in that case."

In my first setup above, with the pocket router connected to my home router (so that my pocket router can function as an access point);
how do I make my home router assign the IP to the Axim?

"I'm surprised you got it to work at all but if you want to use it as a router, you should set its IP range to 192.168.1.xxx. "

How do I do this?
Which numbers do I put in for .xxx ?

If the D-Link is set as an access point, the DHCP functions default to the router. How you set that will depend on the router but most of them have this function turned on by default. The only possible issue is if the router limits the number of IPs it will give out and you have reached its limit, in which case you will need to increase the number allowed or remove some other equipment from the network.

I'm not familiar with the D'-Link's setup utility but somewhere in the setup will be a place for the LAN IP settings. The default will be 192.168.0.1 as the router's IP with a range (probably under the title of DHCP) of addresses it can assign. Change the 0 in that third set to a 1 in both the router's IP and the DHCP allowed addresses. (Note that doing this will mean your WiFi network is separate from the rest of your home network so you'll probably have problems sharing files between the Axim and any PCs. Few people bother doing this anyway so it probably won't be an issue).

Hey thanks for your detailed posts and your WIFI help guides.

But I am hoping you can tell me in hotels rooms, the physical connection that we connect to is usually a MODEM, and not a router.

This way I can keep my pocket router configured as a router, and not as an access point - the only configuration that works for me at this time:

That is, my pocket router (with its switch set to "Router" mode, and not "AP"mode) plugged directly into my cable modem; thereby acting as a router, and not an AP.

So the 64,000$ questions are:
- Do you know if that setup will work in most hotel rooms?
- In other words, are the physical connections in most hotel rooms MODEMS - which would mean pocket router behaving as a router is OK;
or are the physical connections in hotel rooms routers - which means I'll still have to find a way to configure my pocket router as an Access Point?

Hotel rooms do not have modem connections. I have the Asus version of Pocket AP which does not have any router functions and it works at hotels (although more typically I just take my Ethernet CF adapter. It's smaller/more portable than the AP).

Are you connecting directly to your cable modem just to test the D-Link?

Have you tried switching it to AP mode, resetting to factory defaults (without making any modifications to the settings), plugging it into your home router and seeing if you can connect the Axim? If that works (and it should), you can then change the SSID and add any security you'd like to use (WEP or WPA).

Yes, I was connecting to my cable modem just to test the D-LInk pocket router.
When connected to the cable modem (router mode) - internet works!

I then switched the pocket router to AP mode - but no resetting to factory defaults (because I know from previous testing - this does not work); and plugged it into my home router.

Immediately changed the SSID, and added WEP security - and it WORKS!!!
IE connects to the internet consistently!

After much testing, it seems to me that Router Mode connected to a modem, ONLY works without security.
On the other hand, Access Point mode connected to a home router, ONLY works with security.

I don't know if the above makes sense, but thanks to your help, and the others on this board, I finally have my pocket router functionning as an Access Point.

Where WEP on X51v?

I cannot figure out where the heck to input the WEP settings. I have clicked and click/held on pretty much everything. The WLAN utility shows my 2Wire router, I've got both "Network Management" settings for "My Work Network" set to "This network connects to the Internet" (and nothing else checked on that page).

Any suggestions? (I'm just trying to get this to connect via wi-fi for the heck of it; in general I have a Sprint Mogul that does this readily for regular use)

Thanks.

Didn't the Axim ask for the key when you first connected?

Anyway, open the WLAN, turn on WiFi, select Setting and tap on your network's name. The key is entered on the page accessed by the Network Key tab.
