For over a year, I have been trying to connect to the internet via my D-Link Pocket router (DWL-G730AP).
Never have I been successfull; but I am trying again.
I have set-up the router using WEP Encryption (64 Bit).
I have the same settings (including WEP Key) on my Pocket Router and the
Axim X51v.
When I check my configuration (Start - Settings - Connections - Network Cards) everything seems OK):
- my network name is included in the list; "Available" is indicated, and the signal strenght is maximal.
But when when I click Internet Explorer, I can't connect to the internet.
I get a message "Cannot Connect With the Current Connection Settings"; I'm asked to tap settings, where I'm shown the following menu:
"My ISP:
Add a new modem connection
My Work Network:
Add a new modem connection
Add a new VPN server connection
Set up my proxy server"
When you tap it should open the general settings page, tap the Network Key tab, select shared from the drop down, untic "the key is provided automatically" and add your wep key to the box which says "network key". click OK and it should connect.
With WIFI enabled, I tapped on "connecting", "Network key" and everything was as it's supposed to be,
EXCEPT the WEP key had 13 characters instead of 10.
In the dlink pocket router, for the WEP key, I chose 64 Bit - HEX encryption, which is 10 characters.
But when I enter the same 10 characters in the X51v - after checking over and over, it's always back to 13 characters (not the 10 characters I entered)!!
So I thought in the dlink pocket Router I would change the WEP key to 128 bit ASCII - which is 13 characters.
Entered the same 13 characters for the WEP key in the X51v - it accepts the 13 characters; but still unable to connect to the internet :( :(
In fact, the number of asterisks shown in the key field is not indicative of the number that was entered - it always shows 13 after accepting the key. BTW, 128-bit WEP does not have 13 characters, it has 26.
Have you actually ever tried connecting without any security on the router? This should be the first step in troubleshooting connection problems.

Yes, you're right.
I just tried connecting without any security.
I disabled WEP in both the Pocket Router and the X51v.
Same Result:
- it always says "Connecting"; never connected.
Still can't connect to the internet :(
In Start-Settings-Connections-Network Cards;
under "Configure Network Adapters" - for the "Dell Axim X51 WLAN Wireless Adapter" - I have been choosing:
- Use specific IP address
and I insert the IP address of the dlink pocket router: 192.168.0.30
Is that the right thing to do?
Am I also supposed to add "subnet mask" and "Default Gateway"?
Am I supposed to configure also the other network adapters which are listed? (eg L2TP NDISWAN Miniport, Remote-NDIS Host, ...)
Hi,
I had similar issues as to what you are having with my Axim X51v and my speedtouch router where it would just say connecting all the time.
Have you tried letting the router assign the Axim an ip?
Mine did not like that so i had to put in a static ip into the network adapter of the Axim as well as the subnet mask and default gateway also try setting the Name Servers, DNS and WINS as the default gateway address, dont worry about the alt addresses but oddly enough my Axim would not connect without this either?
If it does connect but you get some error message or a constantly connecting message at the bottom of Internet Explorer then i would enable the odysey client and set the router up in that as well as that fixed my problem of not being able to surf the net with the Axim.
My router is very tempramental with anything thats not a PC, Axim has to have static IP and the XBox has to have a DHCP assigned IP hate to think what would happen if i connect a PS3 to it, probably blow up.
Hi,
Have you tried letting the router assign the Axim an ip?
I was just trying that - didn't work.
I tried something else that did wok!!!!, but the joy was temporary :(
As per suggestion of "WyreNut" on the Brighthand forum, I changed the switch on the pocket router to "Router" (instead of AP - Access Point), and I set the X51v to "Use server-assigned IP address".
This worked initially - X51v finally "connected", and when pocket internet explorer (PIE) was opened, it quickly connected to google.com, and then cnn.com.
But further attempts at connection failed, even though the X51v still showed "connected".
After inputing a web address in pocket IE: it says "connecting", then "locating", then "the page cannot be found".
Why would this be???
Why would internet explorer initially connect to the 2 websites above; but afterwards no longer be able to connect to any website???
A few questions and comments based on your posts above:
What is your pocket router connected to? If it is connected to another router in your home, then you can use it as an AP but the home router should be assigning the IP to the Axim in that case. If you want to set a static IP and the D-Link's address was 192.168.0.30, then you cannot use that as the Axim's (each piece of equipment on a network needs a unique IP). This was likely a major reason that you were having trouble initially (although not necessarily the only reason).
Assuming the D-Link is attached to a router, it becomes a problem to have it act as a router while using the same subnet of IPs. The fact that it was assigned 192.168.0.30 means the router it was connecting to uses the 192.168.0.xxx set of numbers but that's also the default set that the D-Link will use as a router and it will probably try to use 192.168.0.1 as it's own IP. But this is likely to be what the router it is connected to will be using so that creates a conflict. I'm surprised you got it to work at all but if you want to use it as a router, you should set its IP range to 192.168.1.xxx.

First setup:
I was trying to make my pocket router fuction as an access point - so it was connected to one of the ports on my dlink wired router, which in turn is connected to the cable modem.
But I could not get the pocket router to function as an accesss point - which I understand is the configuration you need in hotels.
Second setup (as per AKAJohnDoe):
I pluged my pocket router (with the switch on the pocket router now changed to router mode) directly into my cable modem - and now the X51v can connect to the internet all the time!!!
(The X51v is set to "Use server-assigned IP address".)
So with my second setup above, I can connect directly through my cable mode.
But in hotels - don't you have only ROUTERS to connect to, and not modems?
In other words, for hotels, don't you have to make the pocket router function as an Access Point, and not as a router, in order for the X51v to connect?
