Don't hide it. We all share the same moment of reflection accompanying any $500+ smartphone purchase: "Man, I could really use a cheap, new Axim right about now." Say it loud boy, 'cause you might be in luck if DigiTimes' sources are to be believed. According to the Taiwanese rumor rag, Dell is set to "resume its handheld device business" with a focus on Windows Mobile, not Android as previously rumored (though we'd be nuts to rule that out). Sources claim that Foxconn (not Quanta) is preparing to accept handset orders from Dell who is busy organizing its handheld device team under Ron Garriques, the executive VP Michael Dell hired away from Motorola's cellphone division in early 2007. Of course, the industry stood shaking in its Palm OS boots the first time Dell entered the handheld market in 2002 -- a "Palm killer" as Dell's inexpensive and bulky Pocket PCs were then hailed. Now, with Palm all but dead, Dell would enter an entirely different marketplace dominated by premium handsets from the likes of RIM, HTC and that upstart from Cupertino. Following ASUS' resurgent WinMo offerings unveiled at CeBIT and Acer's recent acquisition of E-Ten, we're pretty sure Michael Dell isn't just looking on from Round Rock, fiddling.
Man, a Dell Axim X50/51v with Phone & GPS built would blow everything else away.
Takes 32GB Compact & 32GB SDHC Flash (64GB in total!!!)
Huge 640x480 screen
Plays Videos (hardware accelerated)
Stick a bit more RAM in for snappiness
What else do people need/want?
Isn't everything you just listed included in an iphone already? Except for the fact they don't have CF, but they do have sd (I think), or for sure micro sd.
Don't get me wrong, I like the axim, but the memory/gps/videos/big screen/gps = iphone (I think).
Windows pda's certainly have a broader spectrum of software, especially for business applications that are not browser driven (like retail service).

No memory expansion slots exist on the first gen iPhone. But who knows what Steve Jobs has up his sleeve? :hide:

I don't mind change as long as I'm not around when it happens.

Not sure for the IPhone but the Ipod Touch display is much better than my X51v. I know the resolution isn't there but I've compared them side-by-side and IMHO pictures and video look much better on the Touch. I assume it's color depth but whatever it is, the Touch is vastly superior. I wish I had one. :)
The main thing for me that the IPhone/Itouch is lacking is the removable battery. I'm always switching batteries on my Axim and like being able to run down the extended battery on long flights - knowing that I can just plug in the regular battery and still have plenty of juice to do what I want.
If this was going to be my phone - if I got an Iphone - it would have to have a removable battery so I wouldn't have to worry about losing phone functionality while watching movies.
apple = inadequate and incompatible with 80% (ie: percentage is not a statement of fact, but my personal opinion) of todays office professionals needs. Great toy for teenie boppers to "brag" about... but otherwise useless in my opinion... sit on it and spin if you don't like it... I don't give a flip!
If Dell does launch an Ax phone, I would like to see it come stock with as much RAM as the PPC techs RAM upgrade gives the current Ax. I would like to see it be tri or quad band for those of us who travel. I refuse to ever lose the VGA screen QVGA=no sale. Also, no locked phone. All open to the world of unsigned application goodness! I wouldn't complain if internal storage gained a little space either. Like 3 or 4 gigs.

HTC did a good job when they made the Axim, and I hope it's HTC that's rumored to be doing it again. If another company starts making them besides HTC, I just don't know how good it could be.
But, an X51v Phone (CDMA for me!) would rock. Although, I have 4 ppc's total, all QVGA except the X51v, and I hate QVGA, but two of them have hard keyboards. So, If they could make the Axim a lil thinner, and add a sliding left/right keyboard, I'd buy one ASAP!
Ultimate Axim:
VGA (or better) Multi-Touch Screen
G-Sensor
624 Mhz+
CDMA Phone Radio
Multi-Carrier (or just Alltel :approve: )
Sliding Hard Keyboard
2 Gig's of Storage at least!
At least 512 Megs of RAM
and at least a 128 Meg ROM.
Not to forget about Bluetooth 2.0, and WiFi-B/G
All of that, and no bigger than the current X51v is now!
O... Almost fergot... A Custom ROM!

Don't hold your breath waiting for a VGA screen. It is too much of a battery hog. There is, afterall, a reason why almost all smartphones seem to be a bit of a compromise in terms of features/usefulness.

I agree, I am sticking with my X51V, Razr V3m phone and 60gb picture ipod.
