People, there were those that b_itched when the decision was made not to discuss it and now there are people that b_itch when the decision is made to allow the discussion. Chris can't make every one happy all the time. If you don't want to discuss it, don't read the threads.
i'm considering doing it to my old x51 just to see the differences in performance.
perhaps some real benchmarking would clearly define the benefits if any.
some people like to hack the devices just to say they did.
some would upgrade just because they perceive a performance benefit.
some will upgrade just because they want the latest and greatest.

Great move Chris! I've since moved on to a WM6 device (cellphone) and it would be great to get my X50v up to it's level. (ROM wise)
These new cellphone WM6 devices are great these days but they all lack the sheer um.. MAN PARTS and HUGE VGA screen of the Axim!
It's great what you're doing here but remember, there's other forums out there where ROMs are discussed so if this DOES become an issue again, why kill yourself over it?
I didn't need to update anything. Everything that worked on WM5 worked on WM6. Even Quake III works fine, if a bit choppily at times.
If you want to flash ROMS frequently, though, I recommend that you keep all the .cab files on a CF or SD card so you'll have them readily available when you want to reinstall everything. You could also back up all your contacts, notes, and everything using a backup utility -- then you wouldn't need to connect your PPC to the PC at all; just reinstall and restore everything from your flash drive. This is pretty much what I do, so it takes only about half an hour to restore Everything after a new ROM install. Also, remember your registry changes, if you have any, though you might not need them. I keep mine in a note.
The .cab files are usually kept in your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Activesync\[name of the program] directory -- even if you originally installed it through by sync through Windows, the cabinet file for every program you installed should be there, so just copy those to your CF/SD card, and you won't need your desktop PC for anything.
Just chiming in to say that WM6 is up and running very smoothly on my x51v. I was worried at first but it actually flashed without a problem! Much smoother, quicker, and nicer to look at than WM5.
My X51v is no longer a sluggish hunk of plastic, it actually now out performs my old X50 mid, something it SHOULD HAVE DONE right out of the box.
WM5 was the Windows ME of mobile devices, and I am very grateful to the knowledgeable people here that pointed us in the right direction to get the most out of our Axims.
To those of you whining and moaning about "piracy", which can only be extended to this discussion in the broadest of definitions, enjoy your constantly crashing WM5 and leave the progress to us!

Yes I did download the Windows Mobile device center but still cannot get it to sync, and I am trying to do it via a USB. I will repost this as a seperate thread.
My fault I meant the Windows Mobile device center but still cannot get it to sync, and I am trying to do it via a USB. I will repost this as a seperate thread. Thanks for the suggestion
I understand that WM6 is better than WM5. But can WM5 be fixed so it works or looks as good as WM6? I mean, Windows XP can have the same functionality as Vista, so I suppose that this can be done to WM5 also? There are plenty of programs these days that can skin any OS so it looks better, and there are also plenty of programs that can do better than the built-in programs. Personally I have Softmaker Office, which is way better than Microsoft Office Mobile. I use Pocket Player and TCPMP instead of Windows Media Player. Etc. So perhaps someone can point out the exact advantages of WM6 over WM5 and point out alternative programs?

This is a perfect example of my point. BECAUSE of the decision to allow discussion of illegal ROMs there are many who will, AS A RESULT, download and use illegal ROMs when they would not have otherwise done so.
John
I am struggling to understand what is it that this particular forum does that is illegal, as you claim? There is no downloading from this forum, so none of the objectionable software is present. So which laws are being broken?

You do realize that there is no WM6 rom for X51 yet, right?

I want to know if we can update the Axim X51 not the X51V to WM6 ?
The answer to your question as of today is a resounding NO. Any of the WM6 ROMs are for just two models of the Axim, those being X50V and X51V. Any other unit flashed with either of these two units WM6 ROMS will brick the unit.
