Activesync has stopped working on both my home notebook and work PC in the same week ((XP SP2 on both machines and Winmobile 5 on 51v)). Essentially neither machine can find the Axim when I plug it in to a USB port.
Could it be something to do with the Windows updates that downloaded this week?

Yes it could. I have two friends that the update turned on the windows firewall (they use ZoneAlarm) and then proceeded to block the sync feature from working! You may want to check this out.
I'm running a proper test on this now. I've had the same issue. I've knocked Windows Firewall off and it still has issues. I'm using Lenny's WM6.1 ROM as it happens.
1) Installed Windows XP Pro Corporate SP2. Same as on my desktop. No further updates added.
2) Installed Activesync, and wifi drivers to allow me to sync to Exchange.
3) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
4) Installed Microsoft Update.
5) Rebooted.
6) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
7) Installed the updated update components.
8) Rebooted.
9) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
10) Installed 120 or so updates.
11) Rebooted.
12) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
13) Installed another 5 updates.
14) Rebooted.
15) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
16) Installed the one remaining update. This update didn't require a reboot.
17) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
18) Rebooted just for good measure.
19) Ran a synchronisation. Worked perfectly.
20) Decided to install Office in case the updates to this will affect things.
I will add another update once I've installed office and started syncing/updating.
Installed office.
Ran a sync, all successful.
Installed office updates.
Rebooted.
Ran a sync, all successful.
Installed some other misc software.
Rebooted.
Ran a sync, all successful.
In conclusion, I can honestly say that Windows Updates have NOT broken Activesync on a vanilla system in any way, shape or form.
Hmmm ... first thing, I'm indeed impressed with your comprehensive testing DJ - thanks hugely !
Second thing, I did check firewall settings on both computers and also made sure the appropriate ports were accessible/accepted (in accordance with the MSoft recommendations on ActiveSync Help & How Tos ).
So maybe it's something to do with the fact that recently I tripped over the connecting cable (between the USB port and the Axim) at work. I can't see any sign of damage to the female connector on the Axim, but I suppose it is possible. Does Dell have a service to test these kinds of physical things ?
Or it might be my PC-cillin setup, since the last update was 10th April and that's about when I started having problems, and I have PC-cillin on both my home and work computers.
Actually, it turns out that I don't have PCCillin at all ... how dumb am I ?
BUT (a biiiiig but) for some reason Activsync seems to have started working again yesterday, and coincidentally after the latest round of windows updates. Or maybe it was the latest round of Symantec updates. Who knows, just as long as it keeps working. Fingers crossed. :-)
sort of spooky. My X51v stopped working over activesync about 3 weeks ago. Today it suddenly restarted connecting, has fully synchronised and is back up and running with my PC! It did need me to remove an existing partnership and name a new one (I have 2 partnered PCs but that is not new and was not the cause of the problem) but heh ho.
