Hmmm ... first thing, I'm indeed impressed with your comprehensive testing DJ - thanks hugely !
Second thing, I did check firewall settings on both computers and also made sure the appropriate ports were accessible/accepted (in accordance with the MSoft recommendations on
ActiveSync Help & How Tos ).
So maybe it's something to do with the fact that recently I tripped over the connecting cable (between the USB port and the Axim) at work. I can't see any sign of damage to the female connector on the Axim, but I suppose it is possible. Does Dell have a service to test these kinds of physical things ?
