Aximsitex50icon don't know how to utilize my axim anymore.

In 2004 or 2003... I can't remember which... my mom bought me a refurbished Axim X50... at first I thought it was great. I stopped using it though..... why?

Because I can't seem to get any software for it that is current. I wanted to update my OS to Windows Mobile 5... but I don't know how or where to do that... or if I even can.

So... can I? I've seen discussions about WM6... but I don't think I need that, and I'm not really sure what I can and can't do with my Axim anymore.

I don't want to get rid of it as having a PPC really helps me keep my life organized, but I want the ability to use my Axim and to not be consistently frustrated...

What can I do with my Axim x50? Help please!

So it is an X50 and not an X50v? I don't know anything about upgrading the non "v" models except that they will not work with the "v" upgrades. I don't see anything that should stop you from organizing using the unit. What seems to be the issue?

If you cannot find a good use for it, buy a car mount, charger, and a large memory card and set up your own "carputer." You can use it for music, or sometimes I will load some maps on it, or directions from your email. I havn't used gps, but I hear it works well to use your Ax for navigation.

There seems to be a belief that unless a pocket pc is running the latest or almost latest operating system, the pocket pc is no longer useful. I don't know where this belief comes from. I still use my windows mobile 2003se device EVERY DAY, and I never have a problem finding and installing software to it.

Any Pocket PC you get can handle contacts, tasks, appointments just fine, so what is it you really want to do with it? State that and I'm sure folks here would be happy to make some software recommendations.

I couldn't agree more. I use my x50v everyday and feel lost if I inadvertantly leave it home. I've had my Axim since 12/2004 and except for a "slightly mashed" power button, it looks "almost new".:approve:

I still run most of the third-party apps I installed shortly after I got my Axim and they run fine. They don't appear to go stale with the passage of time.

While there is a lot to be said for being able to run the latest and greatest software, most new versions of software don't represent a revolutionary change from the previous version.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

I don't mind change as long as I'm not around when it happens.

If you do a little digging you can find a WM5 version for the X50 (no V) I upgraded mine and it works great. I also think it was a Dell rom if memory serves.

I have wanted to get WM5 on to my Axim specifically because (don't remember where) I read that some of the issues with the x50 running out of juice and losing data were no longer issues once you got away from 2003.

I'm not looking to use WM6... I don't see a point. I just would like to have WM5 for stability and a few features (improved internet explorer, better compatibility with minimo).

I'm sure there's lots of other things I'd like my Axim to do... I honestly just don't know what I CAN do with it.

I would still be using my X50V and running WM2003SE had it not begun to have hardware issues with the connector. The only software I had to update was Sprite Backup, everything else is current on either WM2003SE or WM5. And from what I've seen, WM6 is really only WM5SE, and WM5 isn't "better" than WM2003SE. It is nice having persistent memory, though.

I think that problem is largely due to the backup battery loosing it's charge. Ceteris paribus, that should not happen unless you leave the unit for an extended period of time without charging.

Also, that's why we sync the unit to a standalone computer. Let's face it....a hard reset is inevitable.

I'd say get to know your Ax once again, then worry about an extreme makeover.

There's plenty of software out there to do just about anything you want with your AX. Mine is running fine and I have no intention of upgrading to WM5. :)

Since you aren't really interested in WM6, I'm working on an improved version of WM5 for the X50(mid) with the latest aku (3.5). If anyone who knows about my project is reading this, my project isn't dead at all, but just slow because I have been running into problems and I haven't really had much time to fix it (not to mention that my X50(mid) isn't in any real operating condition (it broke) to test roms).

Sell it on ebay and get a Mogul. After all, HTC makes x50 and x51v also.

Then use your Mogul to tether free.

I for one do not want a Mogul. Its reduced external memory and smaller screen does not work for my requirements. I will stick with my WM6 X51V and my Razr phone. Maybe two devices to carry but I get alot more out of them than a Mogul would give me IMHO of course. :approve:

I couldn't agree more. When a phone/PDA comes out with the same screen size as my AX, then I'll consider a combined unit. :)
