how to record class lectures on the x51v?

Hey guys, I bought the x51v for graduate school, and I want to record lectures.....

how would you suggest I go about doing this? I don't know anything about how to set it up, and I haven't found much on the subject; i've spent a fair amount of time reading threads

Namely:

-should I buy some sort of mic?
-what software should I use (free if possible; i'm poor)

Resco has a cool audio recorder app that will compress and save to MP3 as well as screen off to save power.

I use Vito Audionotes and really like it because it is so configurable. Lots of settings for different bit rates depending on the quality of the recording desired and space you have available on your storage cards. And it's only $7! Not a bad price for such a good program.

awesome, thanks guys

any recommendations for a microphone? it looks like the x51v comes with one...is that good enough for recording lectures, or should I get one? If I buy one I'd like it to be <$15....i'm assuming you'd use the headphone jack, as thats the only port in?

For the most part, it is pretty good about picking up audio with the built in mic.

If you need an external mic, you get what you pay for.

An additional item would be storage. Make sure what ever application you get for the control of recording has the ability to target the file storage to either a CF or SD (SDHC) memory card. That way you can record directly to the memory card of your choice as well as capacity limitations.

Free is good - I've used NoteM for a while.
FreewarePPC.com - Freeware Pocket PC / Freeware Windows Mobile: NoteM v1.21
Just make sure that you disable the timeout so your unit doesn't shut off while recording.
You should also set the resolution/sampling to 8KHz Mono as this reduces CPU usage which translates into longer battery life.

As for a mic, I've used the ones you can get at the Dollar store without any issues but I may have been lucky. Some mics require a small bias voltage and some don't. The internal mic on the Axim is good for close range. For long range, you an external mic that you can point at the sound source.

Mrs Box uses a jabra BT headset. It has the mic built into it and a headphone jack. So without the earplugs it is very small.
If she doesn't know the lecturer well, she will just place it on his desk or lectern, if they are nice they clip it to their pocket for her and she gets perfect recordings.
I'm not sure if that one works with the X51v wm5 version, but it certainly does with WM6.
Or it may need to have the widcomm stack.
But it's a nice option if you can get a headset that works for you.

Thanks for the responses - I tried Vito and Resco, I think I'm going with resco because of the turn off the screen capability

I'm still a little unsure about a mic though. I'll be in lecture from 8am to 5pm 3-4 days a week (yuck), so I need something a little hardy - I don't think a BT battery would last. I know it needs to be omnidirectional.

Also, as an aside: how do you turn off the automatic standby on the axim?

To turn off the standby, go to the control panel and power and you should find the tab to disable the shutoff. Be careful though - if you unit accidentally turns on, it on until the battery dies.
I always disable the "power on when button pressed" option on mine.
There are free utilities for turning off the display. I'll look one up for you.
