SPB backup has a ROM update feature that allows your backup to be read by newer ROM versions.

So do you mean Dell just left us Vista users in the dark? I feel more comfortable if Dell just gave us .nb0 file for the bootloader instead of their own program.

Thanks Johnhu and Box,
I have windows XP on my laptop along with Vista on the dell desktop. I have wiped my Axim clean of any programs through a hard reset with nothing on it except the factory settings and programs. My question is I still have a active sync on my laptop from two years ago and I will be updating that version as soon as I can, however you mentioned vista as being the best atlernative to update the axim, Is this best and why should I backup a prior Rom when theres really nothing to back up froma fresh reinstall???? Thanks

So you are telling me there wasn't really anything on your Axim originally? Then just don't back up. As for upgrading, Activesync does a great job. Use Activesync on your XP laptop. WMDC is the only alternative for those who don't have/use XP any more.

I had a few programs on it but nothing really important in terms of data. Plus it was in the closet for the last two years. John, you mentioned that XP is a better suited Operating system to upgrade as opposed to Vista, correct? Also, what version of activesync should I perform the rom upgrade?

Worried Lenny vs Makuu

Am currently using Lenny's L11 ROM. It is fast! :approve: Lenny and his team did a great job! Am wondering tho' what Makuu's version is like? In comparison of the both which one is better in what? I read in a previous post that graphics is one strong point that Makuu's is better (true VGA). Can anybody please explain this in more details, please? Thank you so much.

I didn't get to fully test out Makuu's ROM. The true VGA does not come useful to me in regular day use. Most theme's that we use is not designed for True VGA. If you use it, it comes out messed up.

Makuu's ROM is mainly used for multimedia. I heard rumors (not confirmed) that Windows Media Player Mobile does not lag when you play large videos. On Lenny's and Football's I know for a fact they lag.

In general
Makuu=Multimedia
Lenny=Speed

@axim7860
A lot of older programs does not recognize Windows Mobile Device Center as a sync program. I have not used WMDC with any of the Stock Dell ROMs (I have been using the .nb0 and the bootloader).

I know if you connect via Activesync on XP, the Dell stock ROM installer recongnize the Axim as connected. I have not tried to install any Dell stock ROMs via WMDC in Vista. I told you to install via Activesync because I KNOW IT WORKS. That was the reason.

As of the edition of Activesync. "If it is working, don't fix it". If it connects well, don't bother updating. Newer versions only offers an additional troubleshooter.

Lenny

I used Football's ROM's up to version 3, I think; I stopped whenever he he ceased to update his ROMS. Then I switched to Lenny's. His are great, but I've noticed that my battery drains more quickly now. It might just be because it's a couple years old, or perhaps because I use Wifi more, or perhaps the ROM really does drain the battery more quickly. Other than that, it's great.

I have tested every revision of Lennys ROMs and using TCPMP as a movie viewer never had any lag on any of the over 50 full length movies I have watched. In addition the latest ROM L11 has the best battery life of any ROM that has ever been installed on my unit. :approve:

WMP mobile does the job with me. I don't view a lot of videos. Mainly listen to music. I know TCPMP does a great job, but I've no use for it.

Yes, L11 ROM does have the best battery life.

For listening to mp3s I use S2P. It works great with X51Mix.

I notice that the battery seem to be lasting longer too. Not sure what changes from ROM to ROM that makes that happen. I also notice that when it is charging and the WiFi is turned on it is not getting as hot as it was with some of the other ROM's too. Much better release for me for sure.

Welcome to the L11 club. Well Larson, I know a lot of multimedia programs rock. But WMP suits me fine. I have to agree X51/x50mix can be a pretty good amplifier and overall sound tuner.

Johnhu,
I did it I successfully installed the A12 then onto Lennys latest rom and all is well. I wanted to ask you, if you knew of a itouch type theme that would work on the axim. Thanks

congratz, axim7860! When you said "iPod Touch (or iTouch) type theme", did you mean the square cubes that you can manipulate?

If yes, I tried it when the iPhone/iTouch was all the rage. It is not a theme, as themes cannot do this. But it is a .cab file. You can install it and it covers your default screen, like SPB Mobile shell. It looks fantastic. But it's performance is horrible and it is hard to get rid of (Meaning hard to uninstall). So I suggest you don't try it.

If you really want it, here's the .cab- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308215
