axim x51v - mod power input

I would like to re-route the power connector to use the headphone jack due to the mounting position in my 4runner. Has anyone attempted this before? I took it apart yesterday after finding a pinout diagram for the plug on the bottom. It looks like there are several positive and negative connections not including those for usb data. I was curious if this was to allow for more current transfer than only 2 wires could handle. There are also some unused contacts on the side of the pcb which would be easier to solder to... Are these tied to the charging circuit? The next hurdle is disconnecting the audio circuit from the headphone jack. Sounds simple but its pretty tight in that area as well.

If you really must move the power connector, I suggest that you find room in the top of the case for another/different connector (perhaps using the CF slot cover). I had considered a similar mod to my x51v - using a mini usb socket

The h/p jack is surface mount and will not be easy to disconnect from the audio circuit. And, if a pair of headphone should accidently be plugged into the modified jack they're likely to be damaged.

There used to be a stickied thread about making a power lead, explaining which pins to use (as I believe they are slightly different between x50 and x51), have a search for power adapter lead you should be able to find it easily enough.

inequestion,
The x51v will charge and run with an AC or DC adapter that has enough current (~1 to 1.5A). However, the wire size in the cable is probably close to (if not) the same as any USB cable. For the x51v connector, I doubt the shorting of multiple pins has much to do with extra current capabilities. To do what you want to do, with the short distance from the bottom of the x51v to the top, I'd use 22 to 24 gauge wire. Regarding the unused pcb contacts, I'd stick with soldering the wires directly to the connector pins. Without a schematic and circuit board layout diagram, there's no way to safely know what those pads are for.

I think the bigger issue will be disconnecting the audio paths to the headphone jack without ending up with a loose jack. I've never had my x51v apart but if the headphone jack is soldered to the circuit board, that solder connection helps secure the jack so it doesn't move around.

using the cf slot as a mounting location is a good idea. now I just need to find something small enough to mount in there. :)
