I have been using the new version of Opera mobile and I'm really enjoying it's functionality for using fingers as opposed to a stylus. Is there a tool, like a today plugin or something, that works with the Axim that gives the same functionality but for all aspects of the unit? I have been using pocket plus for about 3 years and think it's great but I'm interested in keeping it's functionality and adding the convenience of using fingers.
Give pointui a try, it is free, doesnt take up a bunch of memory and very smooth. It has a very nice interface and is responsive and won't slow down your axim. Make sure you get the beta for vga..
There are a bunch of iphone clone applications but other than that you could try spb mobile shell its nice also but not free, also touch commander is a great interface it has big pop-up start menus, and is finger friendly, though still a bit buggy and not free.
Pointui looks interesting but the copy that I can get from their website doesn't work on my Axim. It installs but when I try to start it I get a splash screen and then nothing else happens. Where can I get this beta you speak of? All of the Betas that google tells me about seem to be old.
I'm trying out mobile shell and it's pretty nice but it is lacking in some forms of customization that I like in pocket plus. There is an internet icon and it is the IE icon, I most likely will never use pie again. I'm an Opera man. I can't replace the icon with the big red O or even place Opera under that menu. Same thing with the "media player" icon. I used the wmp that came with wm5 once by accident and it wasn't fun. Also on the main screen there is no way to get rid of the weather. That function is only good if you are using a phone, which my Axim is not. Generally there are a bunch of phone related functions that you can't make disappear and which are excess baggage for me. Otherwise it's fantastic. Maybe in the future it will have the functionality of pocket plus.
Pointui is also pretty nice too but it lacks some simple functionality like being able to minimize programs. Also it does look a little bland. I'm definitely going to keep one or both of them installed as they generally both do what I wanted. Actually maybe I will only keep mobile shell because of the ability to minimize programs. Then again maybe I will keep pointui because it has so much less extraneous stuff.
EDIT: Sorry this post is so negative. Both applications are very close to what I have/had in my mind but they also miss the boat by a pretty large margin, and this is frustrating :(

Did you try Touch Commander? Thats my last suggestion lol. It does use up a lot of memory and is sluggish sometimes though, between the three of them Im using pointui because its light and snappy.
I agree though theres a few features I wish I could adjust myself, I think if you go to applications under pointui you can switch in between them, but there's no way to do it directly from the task bar that Im aware of.
I hate to say it but I really like the iphone interface a lot

No I haven't but I'll give that one a try too.

The issue with this is that I can't find a way to exit from a program without actually closing it. So if I want to do something like play solitaire while listening to music I can't minimize TCPMP and then open up the game. TCPMP just closes.

you do know you can customise the menus in mobile shell... and create your own ones don't you?
And coreplayer has built in support for mobile shell (if that's your player of choice) you just have to turn it on

You can customize the menu but as far as I can tell it's only a drop down menu with items you can check or uncheck. And opera, skype, TCPMP and word (which are the programs I use most) aren't in there. Am I missing something? If so please fill me in. I would love this program if I could remove all of the things I don't like and add things I do like. Are all of the options explained in Chris Lekness' youtube video? I got tired of it and turned it off because many of the features demonstrated were for phones.
No... you can add new items to the menus, or even new submenus... for either new programs or to specific documents.

I recently moved to Mobile Shell and it has been a revelation using it. The touch system is easy to use, fully customisable, and runs very fast. I think it compares well with the iPhone interface actually.
Yes, you are missing something. The Internet Explorer and Media icons are folders that you can add other folders or items, not just the ones you check or uncheck. In the Customize menu, press the stylus on the 'Internet' heading, and hold on to it until other menu options come up. On of these options is an 'Add' option that you can then add other menus, links, or files. Your Opera, TCPMP etc icons will be here.
I think Mobile Shell is the closest thing that you are looking for. I particularly like the contacts menu.
I agree spb mobile shell is great, it is very comparable to the iphone interface and very smooth, and quick. Probably the best out that I listed if you don't mind paying for it. It is skinnable, and some of the skins look really good.
Most of the iphone clone interfaces out there ie winterface make the axim slow. iLaunch is probably the best iphone clone type software imho.
