Internet Access from X50 via seperate 3G Mobile phone?

Hi all,
Did a search for this and couldn't find anything.

If it's relevant, this is an Australian question!

I am having to replace my old GSM mobile phone, and I'm considering buying a 3G mobile phone.

Can I connect my X50 via bluetooth to the 3G phone and access the Internet on my X50 at 3G data speeds?

Can anyone recommend a suitable make or model that is known to work?

Cheers
..Steve:)

I have a Nokia 6555 3G phone. My Ax and phone recognize each other, but I've never been able to access the Internet.

It is most definitely possible.

The trick is in the settings.

Depending on your network, you will need to set the axim to dial something like *99#, check with your phone company for the correct settings.
You may also have to add a thing called an "extra dialing string" this also depends on your service provider.

That's interesting. But, sounds like a modem dial in to access the internet. :)

My phone doesn't have a number to dial to get into the Internet. At least, not one that's visible. I just click the icon and I'm online with the phone. Did that, made a BT connection to the AX, and tried to open IE. But, got a failed to connect message on the AX, even tho I was still connected via phone. :(

I'm sure there's some setup inside the phone I'd need to enable. I just don't know what it is. Since it's not something I really need, I haven't gone any further in my attempts. :(

You need to use the Ax to start the connection on the phone.

*99# is the most common way, but is isn't dialing a number, it's telling the phone to make the connection.

I'll have to try it tonight. I'd do it now, but our building has poor reception inside. Something to do with being near a security area. :)

Bluetooth Tethering

Did this with my 2g phone. Here are the instructions I got.

*99***1# or
*99***2# or
*99***3# or ....

Depending on what position (CID) internet.fido.ca is set up on your phone.

Obviously I am on Fido in Canada but the same should apply to whoever. For me it was the second one. All I do now is turn bluetooth on both devices (after they have been paired of course) and open explorer and I have mobile internet anywhere on my AXIM! :approve: Now I just need a 3g phone.

Cheers

Tried a few different things and no connection from my AX through my 3G phone. :(

Depending on your cellular provider, your setting will be different, but in addition to a dial up string (as already discussed in this thread), many cellular providers also require a username and password. The username and password is specific to the carrier and is the same for all users in the cellular network.

Thanks for the link Julie. I see Cingular, which I have, has some special setups. I'll try them later. :approve:
