Good morning everyone , I am new here and new to this pocket pc as well . I am here to ask for some help in trying to set this unit up and sync it to my laptop .
I am running windows XP with SP2 and am NOT able to get the axim to show up on my laptop even after I have uploaded to information using the autosync program .here is what is NOT showing uo an dam in need of help :
The laptop does NOT recognize the dell axim pda at all
there is no windows mobile 5.0 to be found anywhere
the original disk the PDA came with has NO other program other than microsoft sync 4.0
Here is what I NEED this pda / computer to be able to do as I need this for school .
I annot access the SD card of CF drive at all ( cant even see it )
I NEED to be able to use my laptop to , as an example , write in events on the " calender " section of the PDA .
There are many reasons why Active sync won't connect, have a look in the active sync forum for more info.
But basically,
Try a newer version of active sync, downloadable from Microsoft web site
Turn off Firewall (the most common reason)
Turn off Antivirus
Use a main USB port not a hub
Make sure you have the most up to date BIOS for your laptop
Check that the regional settings on the laptop and the Ax are the same
untic, "use advanced network connectivity" if it is there in Start/settings/connections/usb to pc
Reboot the PC
Soft reset the Ax
Try those and see how you go.
Once you get it to connect you can Sync the calender.
Active sync will allow you to access the SD and CF cards, but it is quite slow, you will find it much faster to use a card reader.
A little program called Card Export will allow you to see the SD and CF as logical drives but is only slightly faster than Active sync.
" ... Try a newer version of active sync, downloadable from Microsoft web site " ...I have done this as well with no results
" ,,, Turn off Firewall (the most common reason)" ... Once again, done that and no positive results
" ,,, Turn off Antivirus" ... ok , why do I wish to turn the anti virus off for this application ?
" ... Use a main USB port not a hub" . .. Once again , I am using only the main USb ports , no hubs .
" ... Make sure you have the most up to date BIOS for your laptop ... OK , I am lost here , what is this andhow would I go about checking this ?
" ... Check that the regional settings on the laptop and the Ax are the same
untic, "use advanced network connectivity" if it is there in Start/settings/connections/usb to pc " ... I tried this and in the ax , a small window shows up reading " ... failed to disable RNDIS to use serial ... " I have no serial port on my laptop nor is there a serial port connection cable with my ax .
" ... Reboot the PC " ... I have tried this several times and nothing happened that was different .
" ... Soft reset the Ax " .... I have not tried this yet but will try it later on in the day .
Try checking or unchecking the box "Enable advanced network fuctionality".
Regardless whether active sync is working or not. Your laptop should still see your Axim & try establishing a connection to it. Activesync is mainly a conduit for Outlook. If your laptop doesn't recognize your device you will never get activesync to work.
OK , I have tried a million different combinations of everything suggested here as well as a few random ideas and still nothing .
I was able to get my laptop to recognize a PDA was connected to the USB drive , however , when I clicked onto that ( the same as I would if I were to insert a basic USB key ) it shows as totally BLANK , nothing , nadda . GRRRRRRRRRRRR .
I REALLY need to get this thing to show up on my computer AND , I REALLY need to to be able to access the ax from my laptop but nothing seems to work . My laptop absolutely does NOT even indicate what is connected to the USB port at all other that it " has detected a connection " . When I tried the syncing stuff , it kept trying to connect and had I not close it off , it would STILL be trying to connect ... days later . I just want this thing to work . is that so much to expect / ask for / want ? gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Do you get any error messages when you try to connect? If so, what are they?
Have you set your Regional Settings on your Axim correctly? This is one of the commonest reasons for your PC failing to recognise your PDA. Tap Start > Settings > System (tab) > Regional Settings (icon) and set them to your locale
Check your BIOS (as suggested by my good friend Box) by going to your laptop manufacturer's website and searching for upgrades.
Yes , however , I DID this used by the previous owner on his laptop and it worked exactly as I had expected there .
" ... Do you get any error messages when you try to connect? ... "
No , no messages at all .
I just tried once again to install activsync 4.5 and the computer will only now see that there is something pluged into the usb port . When I click onto the icon showing / reading " MOBILE DEVICE " I click onto that and a series of folders now appear , however , when I click onto any folder ( chosen randomly ) they all appear as BLANK pages with NO DATA .. There is NO way I an still able to access any of the functions on the ax such as calender and other functions . The PDA does NOT open up at all .
I have the manual and have read it several times and referred to it often , however , there is no information that I noticed in the book that deals with / dealt with the issues I have described thus far . I am at my whits end on this one and I am not exactly new to computers but , this thing has driven m ecrazy so far .
OK , I have tried mostof the night to getthis running to no avail . I MUST be doing something wrong here . maaybe I failed to ask my question correctly so let me try once again .
Now that I HAVE downloaded ACTIVESYNC 4.5 and SOME folder do seeming appear on my laptop as a result of the connection between the ax and the computer , HOW do i get to see the operatiing system to navigate the ax from the laptop ( how do I get the PDA's windows mobile 5.0 to show up ON MY laptop screen and enter data from there ) The instruction manual makes NO mention ofm this as well as making no mention of the stuff I had posted above with respects to trouble shooting / fixing .
You need extra software to be able to see the Axim on your PC. Mymobiler is one.
But basically, you need to set your active sync to sync with the Axim.
Open active sync on the PC and go to the settings and select the things you want to sync.
Also when in active sync, click the Explore button and it will take you to the file structure.
Do you have Outlook on your computer?
When you enter data into outlook it will be transferred to the Axim when you sync it.
BOX and everyone else , a HUGE word of thanx as I am now able to access my PDA as desired from my laptop :-))))
Hey , I will no doubt have other evil questions to ask but for now , the world is safe .... for now ..
