GRRRRRRR. I have had nothing but trouble trying to get my laptop to " see " my ax and after three of four days of messages back and forht , I THOUGHT I had everything working smoothy .... and for a while it did work but now .......
For the life of me , I cannoth get the AX to been seen by the laptop using the ACTIVE SYNC . I have tried to do the following :
shut down and restart my computer
shut off the computer and wait a few minutes then re-start
tested my USB connection and all are working as required
used every possile combination to conect the ax to the laptop ( referring to sequences of connections )
did soft re-set of ax
Yet , I have done exactly this many times previoiusly and had no trouble with getting a connection
.... and still NOTHING
I am really starting to HATE this active sync thing ... REALLY REALLY REALLY hating it .
Is there aother program that is like this pathetic active " active sync " that actully WORKS ?
I got this thing because I really need it for school but it has caused me more headaches than a profesors speedy lecture on programming . I am just about ready to take a REAL ax to this thing so please someone , a bit of help is all I ask for .
" ... I first open active sync to see which PDA's are listed. ... "
Yes , I have done this as well and ONLY ONE shows up , the one I have which the comoue reads as WM-and my name as per the registration . I should add as well that I run XP with SP2 . The freakything as this has happened once ro twice and when I did a shut down / restart of my computer , the problem was sloved . I was also using it last night and no trouble and then all of a sudden this morning , I tried for close to TWO HOURS to get it to sync up but NOTHING worked .
i starting to think that this while the PDA is fine alright , the sync program it comes with (although I an using " activesync 4.5 ) is a peice of crap ( or insert word of your choice in that spot )
chazbubba and Pedah , I have most certainly done these as well and yet , NOTHING .... GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR .
I think I am pretty much resolved to the fact that this is a piece of junk I am stuck with now , a USELESS piece of junk . The PDA on its own is fine and I love it but the programing to sync it up is about as useful as gasoline as a fire supresant (SP) .
Ages ago I did have some problems. In fact with both the X51V and the o2 Flame which I've been using for a while.
Seemed finally to settle after a complete uninstall/clean re-install of activesync and occasionally a soft-reset of the PDA
(note I'd had a previous PDA before the Ax so had a an older version of Activesynce before I installed 4.5).
I still very occasionally get a sync fail but a soft reset of the PDA fixes it.
Good Luck. I agree this sort of thing is infuriating since there appears no good reason why the B*y thing doesn't work.
Bern , yes , i have tried that as well so many times infact that I can now do it in the dark . I guess it just really frustraits me that a product is released ( as good as it may be ) but the supports that make it work such as software is clearly , at best , substandard or outright defective .
I have called DELL this morning and they were about as helpful as trying to light a match on the moon . I spoke first to some person who had NO IDEA what a PDA is , then to another person who swore to me that there is NO SUCH thing as an axim x51v and never was , yet another person wanted $ 500.00 to have it repaired ... and NONE of there people where even on this side of the globe . One person asked me what I meant when I said it is BROKEN . I replied by asking them , " what part of broken do you not understand " ? ( this after I went into detail about what was and was not happening ) . Is simple customer service really just a myth now ?
Is your firewall off? I had the same problem, I'm not really sure what sequence finally got it to work, but on my desktop it seems that I have to turn my firewall off, and once its connected I can't take it out of the cradle because once it loses connection I have to reset the desktop to recconect. Also if the AX has been on a while I have to soft reset it.
If you're just transferring data, I just use my usb sd card reader to transfer the data, I can plug and unplug it as much as I want and its a fast connection. The only problem with this is if I want to install a program that uses an exe file that is run on the computer, but then I just extract it to cab and put it on the sd card in the card reader, then back to the axim. I really hate using activesync.
I think most customer serivce is handled by third party call centers that don't have anything to do with the original company, they're reading off a piece of paper so they don't have any idea what they're talking about.
KinChee , I have tried just about everything except re-inventing the computer and NOTHING works here .
I am wondering however , you mentioned that you can use you SD card to transfer files to / from the ax .
Can this also be used as a means of updating / adding information the the CALENDER FUNCTION ? I ask because I have not seen any options that allow me to up date the afore mention feature which , is whet is a HUGELY important feature for me .
Update as well ......
When I try to connect the ax to my laptop via the USB cable , a small window shows up telling me : Usb devise not recognized .... one of the usb devises attached to the computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it ... for assistance in solving this problem click this message ...
Once I click onto the directed message , a window shows up with smal icon like images and a message reading : try reconnecting the device . If wondows still does not recognize it , replace the device ...
Just for therecord , ALL my USB slots work as required as I have used other USB functioned devices in all of them .

Guys , I REALLY still need help on this ........
spock
Not sure if this will help as it sounds too simple to be true... But I just experienced the same problem with my X51v not being recognized. I was just about to reinstall ActiveSync but on a hunch, first connected to a different USB port. For some reason, it worked! I have a Dimension 9200 and was trying the front USB port originally. Maybe a driver issue?
I've been having increasingly irratic ActiveSync issues with my X51v for many months now and caught a passing comment on another thread a few weeks ago.
Bizarrely, if I remove the battery from my Axim, count to 10, replace the battery, switch on the Axim and wait for it to boot up and _then_ connect it to my PC, it works with ActiveSync fine! Every time! Like you I've tried _everything_ else. Sometimes when I reconnect it, it connects fine, and sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, I disconnect and out comes the battery again...
It's a bit of a pain - and completely ridiculous - but so far (and I do this a LOT!) it has worked every time. I hope not but I think this device might be reaching it's end of life...
