About a week ago, my axim x51v started soft resetting when I swapped batteries. At first I thought it was just a bug in the L11 since I just recently upgraded from my trusty x50v. However, Battisettings is showing 0% charge on the "backup battery" even though I've left it in the cradle long enough to get a charge. I don't know how accurate this program is, but voltage is showing 11.002 volts, while voltage for main battery is at around 4...doesn't sound good. Could someone with batti tell me what their's is?
The interesting thing to me is that I don't lose my date/time, the only thing that happens is it turns the processor to powersave, and I lose some of my touchfl settings, and does a soft reset. Other than that everything seems normal. It's not that big of a deal, but unlike the rest of my life I am extremely anal about my axim and my Eee Pc.
and since I've been in the axim a few times out of curiosity mostly I think I'm going to do it. I'm going to use the caps that the others in the thread used
Noone mentioned any problems, later on in the thread, but shouldn't this battery be rechargeable, since it's going to be getting a charge? If not Id rather just go to the drug store and tape down one of these, as I don't want to wait for the proper cap in the post.
I suspect there is nothing wrong with your backup "battery". The x51v's built-in Power control panel doesn't show a back-up "battery". I use Resco Explorer's Today Screen plug-in on my x51v and it doesn't have an option to display the backup "battery". The more likely explanation is that Battisettings is reporting it wrong. You said the program reports zero charge but 11.002 volts. That makes no sense. If it were mine, I'd forget about it and enjoy the x51v.
Seems like you'd lose date/time if the capacitor weren't holding a charge, KimChee. What happens if you turn the X51v all the way off, swap out batteries, then power it back on? Do your other settings get foobarred? If so, maybe another test would be to do the above but leave the axim plugged into a charger so the capacitor isn't allowed to drain and see if there's any behavioral difference.

Thanks, for the replies guys, I'm still thinking like an x50v owner, I thought there would be some kind of meter for the cap, like one for the backup battery in the x50v. Or at least some kind of indicator to show it was going bad.
I was thinking the same thing too, breley, if the cap wasn't working, then I'd lose time/date like everyone else was. I came to the conclusion that the soft reset was because the cap was going bad even though it was still holding time/date. Sort of like a hard reset for an x50v when the backup battery goes. But the soft reset/holding time/date seemed contradictory. I hope that sounds like a logical train of thought anyways.
I did try a few different sequences before posting (turning off first, putting in sleep, etc), but none of them provided any different results. Still the same result, soft reset, messed up settings.
It crossed my mind to try it with power, but it was too hard to reach the door switch with the extended battery door with the axim in the cradle...Sooo I plugged it into the serial port powered off and swapped batteries. No soft resets, no changes in settings, just like swapping a battery with normal results. Evidently, it's draining immediately for some reason, though I am not losing time/date. Good call on that one breley.
I actually went ahead and ordered the part since it was only $1.40, I'll go ahead with the repair and see if that fixes anything. If not no big deal, I just like trying to figure things like this out.

I have a unit whose capacitor is not holding a charge and it does not retain the date/time during a battery change out. I use the battery fix application posted on this site as a fix and it works great with not any issue. :approve:

Hey, no problem, from one Cincinnatian to another.:approve: Keep us posted how the part replacement works out.

Sooo...I got the part from Allied Electronics..took the old cap off, with the main battery in decided to check the voltage of the pads on the pcb...2.8v. Next I measured the cap it was low though it was still maintaining time.
I took the cap off, did a little testing, without the cap on the axim would lose the time/date like people were saying, but still wouldnt when plugged in.
Soldered new cap on...it kept time/date like the old one, charged for at least 20 minutes..but still soft resets on battery change, loses a couple settings like before.
I guess the cap and that circuit only control time/date at least in my case as I thought it might, but wanted to test it just in case as it seemed like a simple fix. It won't hold power when swapping batteries..Was worth a shot and didn't mess anything up on the axim, I think I was more concerned about losing the bumpers more than anything lol.
Which means I have an extra working super cap if anyone wants to try to do the date/time fix on their axim..just let me know Ill drop it in the mail
