Is WM6.x on the Microsoft site?
Hi,

I have the X51v and I must have updated the rom a while ago because the System Information program says the rom is the A12 (06200600) I think I remember doing it.

My Question is can we go to Microsoft and download WM 6.0 or 6.1 and the newer Office programs? I went to the MS site and I could find everything but the actual WM programs to download.

I have Windows Vista on my laptop and I don't even think I use Activesync anymore there is a new Windows Mobile Device Center that handles it all.

The Office update is there, I downloaded it and it works fine. Try this link for WM 6.1 for the Axim.

Alan, there is no official WM6.x Rom for the Axim, only cooked roms from a few devs. The link above is to one of those, and probably shouldn't be in the post at all

Yes, it's not official. You can flash it at your own risk. Of course, that voids Dell's warranty. So, if it bricks, you have to fix it on your own.

My bad; I shouldn't have put the direct link in public view. Consider this my apology.

Actually there are several places to obtain a WM6 or WM6.1 ROM and they can all be found by a simple Google search. Most of these sites provide instructions for a installation using their ROMs. None of these ROMs are approved by Dell nor Microsoft but do provide improvements of the last official A12 upgrade provided by Dell. These ROMs are all based upon cell phone OS releases and altered to fit the unit they have been made for. Each ROM that I have found lists within the file name the unit it will support. Upgrading a unit not supported by that specific ROM most likely will brick the unit so be careful in your selection process.

Hi Larry,

I've been there (HTCgeeks)and I have seen there is something called a football rom but will WM6.x work with the A12 rom. In other words, do I need to flash it again? for the football rom? And if we have our version of Office that we got from Dell when we received the X51v, do we upgrade for free?

Hi rlarson,

So I do need to upgrade over the A12 rom. I see that now. Once I do that, can I go onto MS and get the WM6.1 for free or is that something that has to be paid for. Ultimately, I'll probably buy one of the HTC cell phone from ATT, I think there is one based on the Diamond with a slide out keyboard, maybe it's called the Fuze, but that isn't due out for quite a while.

In any case, I'd still like to keep the Axim for a backup and maybe give it to one of the kids. It's too good to shelve.

As for the ROMs, look at this post:
Experimental/Beta WM6.1 ROMs for Axim X51v

When you "flash" (Meaning install an Operating System), you overwrite the previous ROM. Xda-developers has a .cab somewhere that has the office suite (But the site appears to be down, as of now).

If you decide to flash WM6.1, it's free. It has it's risk: bricking your device.

To get to any OS above WM5 (at any revision level) you will need to flash your ROM in the X51V. The directions can be usually found at the site your getting the ROM from. Be aware that doing this will void any warranty remaining on your product with Dell and is not approved nor authorized by Dell or Microsoft. That out of the way the flashing is pretty straight forward and is posted both as a movie and as written instructions. I have done this to my unit well over 25, mostly for beta testing of pre-released ROMs.
