Hiya. I'll try to keep this as simple-language as possible.
First, you can either upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 (WM5) or Windows Mobile 6 (WM6).
WM5 is released by Dell and officially supported. WM6 ROMS (Operating systems for your Axim) are developed by 3rd party developers and are not from Dell. They WILL VOID your warranty if you flash (install that ROM).
With that said, you can choose between WM5 and WM6.
First you need to upgrade to WM5 A01. Download it here: RapidShare: Easy Filehosting. Extract the .rar and use "AximUpdate.exe". Follow directions given.
Now, you can update to WM5 A02 from Dell. Download it from here: Drivers and Downloads. Then, use the installer and follow directions given.
At this step, you can stop here and use WM5 A02 OR you can continue and try WM6. But beware, it WILL VOID you warranty.
Now, you have two choice to choose from. You can choose Maglite's A03 Beta WM6 ROM for x50v (here). Or you can choose LennySh's A09 Test 2 WM6.1 ROM for x50v (here). Personally, I strongly suggest LennySh's A09 ROM. Either way, download the one you choose.
Extract the .rar or .zip. You be given two files, .nb0 and .crc. Get a blank SD card formatted to FAT32. Place those two files on there.
PLEASE Backup all data! Flashing a ROM will erase EVERYTHING.
Now, press wi-fi button + power button. While holding those two, press the reset hole. While still holding the two, release the reset hole. When a screen that says "image update" appears, release the wi-fi button + power button. If it didn't work, try again.
Now, double tap your action button (The button in the middle of your d-pad). The flashing process will begin. Be sure your Axim DOES NOT run out of battery during this 15-30 minute process. If it does, it's toast.
Now, follow directions given and you'll have a WM6 (From maglite)or WM6.1 (from Lennysh).

As the answer to your question 2. All I can think of is not to put too much stuff on the Today screen.

*Note: DO NOT install WM6 ROMs without installing Dell's WM5 A02 ROM first. It will not work.
There, that was as simple as I could get it. To get to WM6, it's a long process. So this would be a good weekend project.
Enjoy,
~John
This worked PERFECT for me. My only hiccup was wifi wasn't working consistently and a soft reset solved that problem 100%. I was limping along with WM2003 and now I'm cruising along nicely with WM6.1.
I appreciate the information shown here. I recently had my Axim x50v stolen, and just picked up another one on Ebay.
I also picked up an SDHC card, and wanted to update my Axim so I could use the card.
I followed the directions given to install Maglite's WM6, and it seems to have been accepted by my Axim. I can view the Axim files from my PC. And it appears to handle the SDHC card just fine.
But, Activesync appears to be having problems. I cannot transfer contact information to my Axim. After waiting a long time for the snc to work, I get an error stating "Synchornization could not be completed successfully."
I realize this may not be the correct forum to ask the question, but I have searched Aximsite, as well as the site where Maglite posted his ROM - and could not find any helpful hints.
If anyone can throw a bone my way?
Or, tell me how to remove the WM6 ROM so I can start over at WM2003SE.
Did you try re-establishing (deleting and adding a new one) a partnership? That might fix it.

I had already tried deleting the partnership and trying again. I've also tried numerous combinations of hard reset on the Axim and re-booting of my computer. I have the latest ActiveSync for Windows XP.
And it still sits there and says looking for changes, then finally gives up saying "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully."
My plan is to go back to WM2003SE, then install WM5 and see if that will sync. Then I will try to find the patch I've seen mentioned that allows WM5 to use SDHC. It's a shame, I like what small part of WM6 I've been able to play with!
Any additional suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Edited to add:
After several hours, and a few anxious minutes, I was finally able to downgrade back to WM2003SE. Suffice it to say, it wasn't a smooth process! But, I can once again sync. And I no longer can view my SDHC card. I even tried a patch that I found on this site, which didn't work.

Yes, SDHC is not supported on WM2003. So, I'm guessing it might just be a bug on WM6.

Since I can't leave well enough alone, I went ahead and tried again. First I did the AM5 A01 upgrade, using the above mentioned file. Upgrade went fine, I now have WM05 A01. Tried to AutoSync, no good. Same problem - it performs the "Looking for changes" for several minutes, then times out with a "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully" message.
I would suggest that you completely remove Active sync from your PC, reboot the PC and reinstall ActiveSync, You may have better luck with an older version of AS.
Any version above 4.0 will work.
The problem may be that the PC is having a conflict, it still thinks the Axim is 2003 and can't cope with it being WM5.
By removing AS totally, it may fix the problem.
Unfortunately, I had performed a complete uninstall of ActiveSync earlier this morning. Downloaded the latest version from Microsoft, then reinstalled it.
I will see if an earlier version will work better.
Edited to add .... Activesync 4.2 has the same problem.

It's a very strange problem.
If the PC syncs with the old operating system, then it shouldn't be any of the usual AS problems.
Many people have upgraded and had no problems.
I can't think of what else to suggest just now, but maybe this will bump it to someone who has had the problem before.
Late yesterday I decided to give it one more try. Fresh download of WM05 A01. Uninstalled, and cleaned up some Registry entries for ActiveSync. Re-installed ActiveSync 4.5. Upgraded to WM05 A01, tried to sync. A/S messed up, said had problem communicating with my Axim. Ok, time to give it up and go home.
This morning I come in, put my Axim in the cradle planning to backgrade to 2003SE, and reinstall A/S again. Low and behold, I get the Dell screen asking if I want to reset? I say sure, why not, nothing to lose at this point. It does a reset, comes up (still WM5 A01) and ActiveSync starts up and starts to sync!!! Very slowly, but it is working!!!????!!!
So I've now installed the MagLite WM06 with the Zeus-Alex change to 0 PP. It is syncing (using A/S 4.5) but it is going very slowly - working for a few hours now and not quite half done (I have 4500 contacts to send over). The Axim is also extremely slow in responding to screen input.
But hey, I'm making progress! It recognizes the SDHC card. And I plan on trying to some resets to see if it clears up the responsiveness issue.
