Mobile internet

I've read several posts about trying to turn the axim into a cell phone and how it is more of a pain than anything. I have a x51v and would like to be able to connect to the internet for emails, chat, searches, etc. on the fly. Is this possible and if so how do I do this. I'm on jobsites most of the time w/out wifi.
Is connecting through a blue tooth phone the best? Or is there someother way to make this happen?

Thanks

With a data connection of some sort (BT to cell phone)

You could get a data card for the CF slot (if there is such a thing), but it would require a cellular data plan.

All things aside, it CAN be done, but it is more trouble that it is worth. I say that because I did it myself for over a year, and it is just a PITA. Once I bought a converged device (AT&T 8525, 2 years ago) i couldn't believe how much nicer it was.

My suggestion is to buy an unlocked PPC phone that will work on your Carrier's data network, or if your plan is close to renewal, upgrade to a newer PPCPhone device. You can keep your Axim, as it is still an excellent machine, but once you go converged...

I agree with Radimus. Using a Bluetooth phone to connect a pocket pc to the internet is easy to do, but not something I enjoyed doing very much...handling two devices was a PITA.

I got a converged device about 2 years ago (IPAQ hw6925) and it is so much easier and I really do check my email when I'm on the run much more than I ever did when I had to pair my cellphone and pocket pc. Having the converged device did not make me get rid of my pocket pc...I still use it every day since it has a larger screen, more memory (CF & SD card) and just a faster, nicer device - even though it still runs windows mobile 2003se.

You can easily use wifi at hotspots and/or home network. I use wifi at home, beauty shop, friends' homes; anywhere I get a wifi signal.

connecting mobily

x51v. I would like to be able to connect to the internet for emails and text mobily - not only in hot spots. I'm on jobsites quite frequently and don' have access to hotspots. Is there a way to do this? How about a broadband card through a cell provider? Or is there a better way.

Your help is most appreciated

Welcome to the site!

There are CF cards that allow data access such as this one:

3G FOMA Compact Flash Card

(Note that I am not endorsing this card, just providing an example.)

Your other option would be to tether your X51v to your cellphone which has data access. This is usually done via BT but there are cables that do this as well (may be hard to find and may not be available for your particular device combination though).

Thanks

My job requires that I use the PITA nextel direct connect and my phone is through the company so my hands are kinda tied as far as getting a BT phone with a data plan. I will probably look to other more reliable carriers for a CF card with a data plan.

If anyone has reccomendations on a provider they are welcome. I will go talk with a few different ones myself.
