Good old x50v getting a second life

Ok, I have not used my axim x50v in over a year and a half. I just turned it on and it still works. Im not sure if my 4GB Micro Drive still works though… But hey that’s ok.

I would like to get as up to date as possible, Right now the ROM version is A05 (stock), ill look to see if there is any updates to this.
Well I want to use this old gal as a GPS. And right now that’s basically it. I have a Bluetooth GPS that works great, I just need to get the software. Since I haven’t used my dell in a bit, im not sure what it can handle. I would like a map program that will give turn by turn directions and actually say the street names. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Or any tips what so ever?

Also Should I even try to upgrade to WM6? I am only going to be using this as a GPS and I have a phone that I use with WM6.1 Its nice to see that the PDA that got me started with PDA’s is still kickin!!!

PS. Where the heck can I get a WM5 Upgrade Disk? I want to put GarmanXT on my PDA and well dell doesnt sell the disc any more. Is there a download now?

Welcome back to Axim/Mobilitysite!

Upgrading a x50v to wm5 or wm6 will give you a speed reduction, but if your only using it for GPS then you should be okay.
There is or used to be GPS software by Tomtom that ran fine on wm2003se.
Its called Tomtom Navigator.
If this software is anything like whats preloaded onto Tomtom GPSs, then it is great!

But if you already own Garmin XT software, which requires wm5+, then you would need to upgrade.

You may be able to find a wm5 cd on ebay or something, or check out xda-developers - Powered by vBulletin for homemade wm6 roms.

You should probably get a new memory card if you plan to use GPS. You can still use your microdrive, but in 2009 microdrives are obsolete and flash based cards, which use less power are now a lot cheaper. Check out Newegg for CF Cards.

If you want to get a sd card, realize that 2003se doesnt work with sdhc cards, which is most 4gb+ cards avaliable today. Wm5 has some sdhc compatiblity and wm6 has full sdhc compatiblity.

Hope that helps...
