I purchased my Axim X51v new from Dell in December 2005. The installed operating system that it shipped with pre-installed was Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 (OS) - Now on my PC all Windows operating systems have to be resinalled every 6 months to keep the machine performing properly, or so I have found. I have found this to be the case also with windows mobile. I have not added a service patch or an upgrade to the Axim since I have bought it. I am not even sure that Windows mobile has service patches or upgrades. Anyhow, after 3 years this item defiiitly needs a reinstallation - the symptoms are that do get the Axim performing properly you have to remove the battery at least once a day and boot up from scratch (reverting to system day 1 etc). However, when I looked through the items that shipped with the Axim I noticed that there is no operatinb system CD of the type that ships with a new PC. Note, I do not mean that the CD is lost - the shipped list is complete, and does not inclde an OS CD. There is a CD, but it contains games etc, but no OS. I went to the dell site, but they do not have any method to download or otherwise request the OS, and whats more it appears that Axim is a discontinued product. I visited the microsft site, but they have no way of downloading an OS. OEM licensees are directed to the supplier of the kit. ¿has anyone had this problem? ¿Were they able to obtain a legit copy of Windows mobile? ¿Is the Axim considered disposable, in that the OS isdesigned to outlast the hardware? ¿Has anyone experimented with Open Source alternatives when they could not get Windows mobile?
I know there are machines much better than the Axim nowadays, but I do not want to throw away a perfectly good hardware for want of a functioning OS

Machines much better than the Axim nowadays? Ha! Ok maybe a few, or I am in complete denial :D. In my opinion, phones and converged devices are just starting to catch up.
Hard reset will restore factory settings, make sure you have your data backed up. If that doesnt work then perhaps you might want to try flashing a new ROM.
When I received my axim x51v it had the final rom version in it or not am not sure its os 5.1.195 build 14957.2.3.1 never had a problem. My guess is you want complete functionality to its original state without risking flash roms ect. The above posts were correct in a hard reset will put the rom back to its original state when you bought it brand new.
The cd is just a compilation of free trial products and installing a very old outlook and how to guides.

Thanks in advance for all replies
The only thing of value on my original X51V CD was Microsoft Office Outlook. The rest of the CD was filled with sample applications none of which were of any interest to me. The ActiveSync application was on there but was out of date and available on the web free as a download. The OS is held within the ROM of the unit. Which is great since it can be restored with a 'hard reset' and be altered as newer OS updates or upgrades are developed. The OS from Dell never went beyond WM5 A12. The web has updated ROM flashing files at WM6 and WM6.1 with some beta versions of WM6.5 available. If you do an upgrade of the ROM by flashing it just make very sure you follow all of the instructions since others here and elsewhere on the web have reported 'bricking' their unit. :approve:
