PocketDOS - Adds DOS compatibility to your Pocket Computer

Pocket DOS is probably your best bet. It probably supports those CPUs, if not there are third party plug-ins, and it supports VGA.

Hello again,

Yeah, I have PocketDos with the 346 and 446 processor patch, but the performance is not very good running this old vertical scrolling arcade game (Raptor: Call of the Shadows). I was wondering if there is any other DOS emulators for wm5 supporting VGA and 346 and 446 processors other than PocketDOS. I tried to play around with the refresh rate and the frames per second in the settings, but it didn't make much an improvement in the performance.

Also, if you have any other ideas on what I could do to solve this case that would be great.

Regards,
ztdtzd

Well, there are a few others like DOSBoxPPC (Made for 2003, may work on WM5, QVGA 240x320). But DOS on the ppc is kind of a limited niche and I don't think there is too much else out there.

On Pocket DOS's website they have one tip you may want to try:
"Have you enabled "direct screen access" for the display? This will speed up the display dramatically. You can enable "direct screen access" by typing:

SETSCRN DSA ON

from the PocketDOS prompt, or by enabling the "Write directly to display memory" option in the "Settings->Display" menu item."

Also, I've attached a little program I found at XDA, it allows you to create a RAM-disk in WM5 so you can use the (much faster) RAM for storage (like in WM2003SE). It may be more trouble than it's worth though as I don't think the contents survive a soft-reset since the RAM loses power in WM5 and up.

Hello all,

Thank you Mike, i'll give that a try. I saw the "Write directly to display memory" option in the setting but coudn't tell if it did anything to the performancce. I think I will try the attachment that you included. Is there anything else I should know before using it on my x51v?

Thanks,
ztdztd

I once played with a DOS emulator on my X30mid so I rememembered a big post by Menneisyys on everything you would want to know about DOS emulators. You can find it here.
The demand/interest for this must have gone down though. The emulator I tried was pDosbox by Wall and his site is no more.............

n0p's site is still there, but it hasn't been updated since 2006... Great post though! That was very informative. I'll load up both, n0p's DOSbox for speedy 286 games and PocketDOS for the features when I need'em.
