Axim x50v goes to sleep -- memory error

After i have charged my device, I lock it and put it in the case. When I try to use it an hour or so later, it won't boot. If I connect to computer I get a message "memory error," and instructs me to press the first button to left of middle to boot, or to erase what's on the device. Today I tried pressing power button and reset button at same time, and then when I got the question whether I wanted to return to factory settings, I answsered no, and the device booted normally. Will it really help to erase all programs and start over?

thanks

Yes, Power+Reset is a hard reset. It restores everything back to the way it was when it left the factory.

Try pressing just the reset hole for a soft reset (Like a PC reboot). See if that works for you.

Your firmware may be corrupted so that every time you do a hard reset, you restore a bad OS image to the device. Try to reflash the OS back in to the device or use a newer version of the OS.
Also, check the internal battery voltage and the main battery voltage to ensure they are not below spec. The problem with the X50 series is that the OS is held in RAM and not flash. The RAM must be kept refreshed while the device is 'off'. Id the battery is not up to snuff, the RAM might become corrupted. Another issue is that the dynamic RAM chips used might have developed a bad memory cell. Ifg that is the case, you need to send the device to a place like PPCTechs to get the chip replaced.
You can do a memory test by placing the PDA into selftest mode holding a few buttons and presswing reset - I don't remember the buttons off-hand but you can search for them in this forum.

good luck.

To get into diagnostic mode/ selftest mode:

1. Press Power + Record button (on the side)
2. While holding the two, tap the reset hole
3. Release Power + Record button when a screen pops up
4. Follow all directions as prompted

I had a similar problem with one of my four batteries - so in my case it was a contact problem.

Since I put on a slice of tape on the small side on the battery - opposite the contacts - to ensure firm connection the problem has vanished :o
