PocketPC RAM Upgrade worth $170?

Has anyone had this service performed on their x50v/x51v?

I'm curious to know if it's worth the $170, whether it would breath new life into the system and make a night/day difference. I'm going to get another x50v to replace the one of mine the broke, and was wondering if this upgrade would be worth it sometime in the future.

I mean, I know that obviously double the RAM has to be a good thing, but I'm wondering of anyone out there had it done, got it back and was like "Oh my GOD!!! THIS IS CRAZY FAST!!! YOWZA YOWZA!!!!" or something like that. :p

There's a cheaper alternative to having the RAM upgrade, but you would have to ship your device to Honk Kong. I have a link to the thread with information on the upgrade below.

Suggestion: HOng Kong RAM upgrade - HTCGeeks Forum

Just buy a new device... the RAM is there as well as a faster cpu and gpu.

Rad, mind giving an example of a superior device?

Axim x50v and x51v have one of the fastest CPU in the market today, still. I guess the RAM is insufficient for some, but the RAM upgrade fixes that.

The Ipaq 211 is the only newer PDA that I know of that is VGA, has the 624MHz processor, and 128MB of RAM, but it's pretty expensive for a PDA. Of course if you include the RAM upgrade price to the price of an x51v, that could be pricey also. There may be HTC devices that meet that have the specs, but I know that they would be pricey, too.

Unless they can get the specs higher and the prices lower, PDAs are going to fade away. You can get MSI, Asus, and Acer mini lap tops for cheaper than an Ipaq 211. That's pretty sad considering all the restrictions you have on the PDA. I'm a big fan of PDAs, but besides the MP3 player aspect of them, I'm getting pretty fed up with the lack of software development on them. Thanks to Lenny, Makuu, and Football for the custom ROMs, but I'm getting fed up with the lack of reliable flash players. Skyfire is by far the best web browser for flash, but the picture quality isn't the greatest and I have yet to find a way to play videos in full screen and the videos play choppy in landscape mode. Skyfire is off to a good start, but I have a feeling they will be charging monthly fees in the near future, especially if Opera can't get full flash support in their browsers.

The bottom line is that the older PDAs seem to be better in most PDA fan's opinions. From the opinions I have read, it looks like the HP Ipaq hx4700 and the Dell Axim x51v are the best PDAs ever made. The Ipaq 211 may be great, too, but I don't think there's many people that want to go out and pay the price wanted for it.

I had it done to my X51v in December. I like running Lenny's WM6.1, but found that I had to reboot with the standard ram quite a bit. I also had just purchase OnCourse Navigator 8, that has TTS. But, the TTS will only work if you have more than 128MB of ram.

I feel that the $170 was well worth it. I can have tons of apps open at one time, and the TTS on OCN8 is really nice. Also, things do seem speedier. However, I didn't time things before the upgrade, and there's no way of going back. Whenever, I show something on my X51v, people are pretty amazed, and ask what it is. (Look I can even do Cut-and-Paste! Take that you iPhone users.)

It'd be worth it if you like to run a lot of programs at once, I don't think you'd notice a speed difference per se, but you'd be able to run more programs without worrying about ram. I like to run opera mini, aim, and pocketmusic, at the same time, but from time to time I run out of ram. As for the price the HK ram upgrade seems like it would be worth it, but the PPCtech price is more than my Dell Mini 9 cost (thanks to a couple lucky coupons).

Id get an x51v if you're going to stick with axims, I've owned both and the the way the x51v handles memory is much better imho. For the price the x51v is still the best deal around for the money, and still has great specs compared to modern offerings. I also have 32gb of storage on sd/cf cards so I dont think theres many devices around that can use that much.

With 128 Mo of ram you can increase the pagepool to say 16 Mo. Your device will than be more responsive and will globally run faster.

I have two x51v with upgrade performed by PPCtech and Palm Center in HK.
From europe the service is better @ Palm Center. Not only it's cheaper but also the upgrade is performed faster and feedback and tracking from Alex (from Palm Center) is better than the one I had with PPCtech.

Hmm. Well if I send in an x50v to PocketPC Techs, they say they put a better quality RAM in addition to the fact that's being upgraded. I wonder if the better quality RAM in an x50v would make up for the fact that the x50v is said to handle its memory worse than the x51v handles its memory. Any thoughts on that?

Honestly, if you use or plan on using WM5 and above, I would get an x51v. I had an x50v and I sold it because I thought it was horribly slow and laggy with WM5 and WM6.1. The filesys.exe kills it and makes it slow. The x51v works so much better.

The RAM upgrade really only benefits running more than 1 program at a time from my understanding. I haven't had any RAM issues with my 64MB of RAM on my x51v. I have always been sub-conscious of only running 1 program at a time because I've always wanted to have my battery last as long as possible.

Anyway, if you are using WM2003, I think the RAM upgrade would probably be a waste because the main programs that eat up RAM are the newer web browsers, which don't even work on WM2003.

The bottom line is that I highly recommend just upgrading to an x51v and then getting the RAM upgrade at a later time if you still want more RAM. I would be willing to bet that the x51v with it's stock RAM runs much better than an x50v with 128MB of RAM.

I would agree with PDA810,

If you want to run WM5 or above, get a X51v.

Microsoft changed the memory model in the OS between WM2003 and WM5. Dell created the X51v to take advantage of this new model. Many people have tried (with some success) to get WM5 and WM6 to run on a X50v, but it will not work as well as a X51v.
