What's the closest thing to an Axim x51v Smartphone?
OK, I'm finally going to take the plunge in a few months and buy a smartphone instead of carrying my Axim and Cell phone separate. I want something that comes as close to the functionality and usefulness of my VGA Axim but more modern(faster processor, etc).
Please don't curse me but I have been considering the iPhone as a replacement since one of the medical programs I use most often is available for it but I am not exactly ecstatic about AT&T stranglehold on it. I don't have a problem with AT&T as a service provider, I just don't like the limitations they are forcing on Apple due to limited bandwidth and such.
I want VGA, large screen, Large memory capacity or at least capability of SDHC cards so as they increase in size I can increase it's available memory, WiFi, BT, basically everything my x51v has but includes a phone.
Once I get some ideas about what phones I need to look for I can find a provider that supports them. I use Sprint now(moved kicking and screaming from NexTel) and mt plan expires in February so I want to start looking for the phones now so I will know what to get when the time comes.
I have my eyes on the HTC Diamond 2 or the HTC Touch Pro 2... :)

That may be an option but when I look online, the only models that are shown in my area for Alltel, Verizon, et. al, are the older model units. perhaps they'll make it into the supply channel by the time I'm actually buying.
Did you look at unlocked phones? Then you can use them for any carrier.

I personally like the Samsung Omnia out of all the current windows mobile based smart phones. The screen won't be quite as nice as the X51v but you get a 5MP camera, wifi, bt, 8GB built in and micro sdhc support. It also comes with a stylus and an FM radio tuner! It shares basically all the same functionality as the X51v since it is windows mobile based. I have no personal experience with this or any windows mobile based phone when it comes to installing and running applications of your choosing though. I actually bought an X51v to replace my Toshiba e740 pda because I needed the functionality of windows mobile, but I refuse to pay the criminal organization known as verizon wireless an extra $30/month (on top of my already ridiculous wireless bill) just for the apparent "privilege" of using an Omnia smartphone. The Omnia II looks great too if we end up seeing it on any US carriers.
I'm also going to be in need of one of those types of phones
I love love love my Axim but I feel that the 1.1 data transfer tech is just too darn slow for me! I know they are coming out with phone/pda hybrids that possibly can do what my Ax does but will be more versatile with my multi-tasking ways.
I'm glad you posted this b/c I've been wondering about this for a while now!
I'm still keeping the Ax though :)
It's a great portable media powerhouse still :approve:

If you can still wait for a couple of months, you might consider holding off until the release of the WM 6.5 based HTC smartphone. It's code names have included both "Leo" and "Firestone," but it will likely be given a different name when the carriers get it. Here are the specs.
I love my ATT (HTC) Fuze. It is just so great to have a converged device, and it is really powerful. It has twice the memory of the Axim. I have been eyeballing its successor the TouchPro 2 -- available or soon to be available on multiple carriers. Looks like the large screen will make it more and more like the Axim.
I didn't think I would get much use out of a keyboard, but have been very surprised at how handy that is. However, if you really don't think you'll use it, go for the slimmer, Diamond 2.
I am an x51v to Fuze convert, though that shouldn't be too surprising since HTC made the x51, too!

My friend had an Omnia; I really liked the built-in optical mouse. Screen was OK (touch almost as good as the axim) . He couldn't get on with the phone (too fiddly without dedicated buttons) so now has a HTC Touch HD - which I think would make a nice Axim replacement (when he buys the next generation iPhone ;))
