Transfer programs from SD to CF

I have lots programs installed on my 2GB SD card, but now i want to upgrade to a 16gb CF. Is it possible to simply copy the contents from the SD card onto the CF card? will the programs still work?

thank you.

You can just copy but the shortcuts won't work.

You can use a program like SKtools or Memmaid to reorganise the links.

If you don't have many programs it can be easier to just reinstall them to the CF card.

You can copy the contents of the SD card to the CF card (use your computer to do this). Then use SKTools to rename the CF card to whatever the SD card was named on the pocket pc - you'll also need to rename the SD card to whatever the CF card was named on the device. No registry changes are necessary, and all your shortcuts will continue working fine.

I've done this several times and it works great. See this article if you need a more detailed description of the process:

Moving to a Larger Storage Card

Registry Changes

Technically, I suspect that SKTools changes the registry entries that map cards to file names. I would say that no "registry editing" is necessary. ;)

I used to edit the registry manually on my iPAQs to avoid conflicts between the CF and SD cards (whichever one you inserted first would be Storage Card and the other would be Storage Card2). Changing the mapping to "CF Card" and "SD Card" fixed that issue. I also created .reg files to apply the changes automatically (after installing Resco Explorer).

I wouldn't recommend doing this as I think you will only be asking for problems. Copying from SD to SD is not a problem. I think you would be better off just reinstalling your apps.

I've done it 5 or 6 times and never had a problem. I don't know why you think doing this would be asking for problems.
