I will attempt to answer questions that I can, when I can.

My 3 big disapointments are
1. Cradle is kind of bland no flashy lights or anything
2. i really liked the X5/x3/x30 stylus
3.price for the high end model with vga is a little more than i have to spend atm
Which one is better: Dell Axim X50 Handheld 520MHz OR Dell Axim X30 Handheld 624MHz. I want to buy a Pocket PC (first time) (old user of Palm until screen broke) and it seems like X30 high is a better buy than the X50 mid?

I'd go with the X50mid (520) hands down.
Slightly heavier and lower CPU, but overall it's a lot more value.

I'd agree with that. And the magnesium alloy case sounds more sturdy. Let's see if the X30H gets a substantial price drop: that might make me change my mind.
They all have IrDA ports, just as pretty much ANY PocketPC has.
The question that still remains is whether or not they work efficiently with Consumer IR applications like PDAwin and Total Remote.

Consider that Dell includes Total Remote on their Companion CD, and has ever since the X3. They ran into some problems with the X50 that necessitated some emergency coding on our part, but just the usual hiccups associated with changing to a whole new PPC manufacturer. HTC engineers were awfully damn helpful in reconciling one or two technical issues, and the result is Total Remote is better for it.
Dell tests Total Remote before the release of each new Axim, and I get all the feedback, so you can be moderately assured that any Axim that includes Total Remote will work with "most" gear to a distance of 6 meters with nothing but IrDA. :approve:

Thanks for the update, Don. Posted to you over on RemoteCentral, but you beat me to the answer over here. :)
