dvd encoding for the 640x480?

hey all,

i've been looking at everyones prefered methods on transfering dvd to ppc and i noticed that none seem to take advantage of the higher res of the x50v. i know that in a smaller format you can get a decent quality movie on 256MB, but i'd like to try my luck at more. it's seems like some of the simpler packages only offer 1 or two quality options... anyone have suggestions on the higher format?

Try PocketDivXEncoder and choose E800 as the option. I haven't actually tried this on my x50v but it's on the to do list. This supposedly encodes at 640x480. Please post your results if you give it a try.

if you look at this guide http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=3970 then you can change the demensions to what you want...

also note in this guide http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=44591 you could change the output dimensions also

and in Pocket DVD Studio (not free but very automatic) there are many modes including 640x352

Yea theres no reason you cant follow standard encoding guides and just change the math a bit to end up with a movie encoded at 640x480. You could even end up with a file the same relative size in megabytes at the higher resoluiton but you would sacrafice quality. Get a bigger SD card if you looking for high resolution and decent quality

For decent quality movie in 256mb, you can either pick DIVX AVI or WMV. RMVB is currently out of question until Real Player on PPC supports it.

DIVX AVI - you can use ImTOO DVD Ripper and DVDX to do it
Pro - Betaplayer runs it smoothly, FAST and easy to rip, variable bitrate you can pick to get the size and quality you like.
Con - text and edges are too rough at low bit rate.

WMV - you can get Pocket DVD wizard to convert it in one step
Pro - file size are smaller even at the same bitrate as DivX, Graphics and motion are very smooth, you can stream it over the network, PDW has a new 640x480 support and subtitles and text are very clear
Con - slow converting at low res, UNBELIEVABLE slow when concerting at at high res.
