Programs installed in ROM?

Hi,

There may be some programs which "should NOT" be installed in ROM due to the way to run (like reading/writing in registry), but there are some programs which "can" be located in ROM without any problems.

Please list your programs in ROM if you already installed in there (without any problems), and/or list programs which should NOT be in ROM at your knowledge/experience.

Sprite backup
Dinarsoft software (HandyMenu/Launcher/Switcher)
Advanced Explorer
Pocket Informant

Vito Button Mapper
Vito remote

Is it possible to install programs into ROM(or RAM) and data into SD(or CF)? For example, programs for street atlas into ROM(RAM) and map data into SD(CF), or programs for dictionary into ROM(RAM) and database into SD(CF).. Does it slow down?

And can I move "My Document" folder into ROM? Most of heavy data are in the folder, but I don't think I will remove them frequently.

Contact Breeze should not be in ROM.

Don't know about Street Atlas, but I have Pocket Streets in ROM and the maps on SD.

I use the following methodology:

* All games go to the SD card, because they are often byte-hungry.
* All Today plugins get intstalled in RAM, because they sometimes have trouble loading otherwise
* Everything else goes to the Built-in Storage.

Works well so far.

Basically my organization as well. The programs I have in BIS are ones that I constantly need. That way I still have access to them if I switch memory cards. I leave my Main Memory (RAM) as free as possible (for running programs), with the exception of Today plugins.

The programs that come preinstalled are part of the ROM and cannot be removed.

Right now, I have Wisbar Advance 2, Pocket Mechanic, SK Tooks (which doesn't work right from ROM, but they are working on it), Pocket Tweaks 2k2, CTCursers, and Sprite Backup installed in ROM. I am thinking about uninstalling Resco Explorer and Handy Menu from RAM and put it into ROM.

i remember trying to install spb software pocket plus in rom and it won't allow me todo so (version 2.x i believe) but i found a way to get around it.

i used pocket mechanic to rename my built-in storage to something else (i.e. "drive"). restart, make a folder called built-in storage, install pocket plus there, then copy it to the "drive" folder, and rename the fake "built-in storage" to something else (i.e. "junk"). go back to pocket mechanic, and rename "drive" back to "built-in storage", reboot, and then delete the "junk" folder. voila, it works.

of course it's troublesome and it really doesn't save that much space, but i tend to try and put everything into rom.

it worked for me :)

Is it possible to move "My Documents" into ROM? Is it a special folder many other programs are looking for from RAM? I may just want to use it to save theme(*.tsk) files and some photos(My pictures), which are just for storage.

So far, I tried Resco Explorer, Photoviewer, Sprite backup (these files are quite BIG) into ROM, and they seem working OK. Sometimes, "owner info" in Today is shown broken, but it gets back OK after a couple of refresh. Not sure it is because of Sprite itself, or because of Sprite in ROM... My version of Sprite doesn't support VGA.

It seems I need move "My Document" into Built-in Storage, and then change my residtry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Explorer/Shell Folders/My Documents to "\Built-in Storage\My Documents"
Please confirm me that's all I need to do.

Thanks,
